Trivia / 1-2-Switch

  • Invisible Advertising: Even in comparison to other Nintendo EPD4 titles, many of which are casual games announced outside of their more core-focused Nintendo Direct webcasts (e.g. Ring Fit Adventure, Big Brain Academy, Game Builder Garage), Everybody 1-2-Switch! was this. The initial announcement saw no trailer, only a quiet mention on Twitter and none of their other social media accounts, while its page on the Nintendo eShop had no in-game screenshots and little information outside the pricing. Though the game would get a "First Look" trailer a week before launch, said trailer was uploaded the day before a Nintendo Direct, ensuring that it would be buried by all the following day's announcements.
  • Playing Against Type: The woman on the upper-right of the 1-2-Switch! cover? Grey DeLisle, a well-known voice actress. (She's also noted they photoshopped her nose to be bigger, rather than smaller.)
  • The Shelf of Movie Languishment: Everybody 1-2 Switch. Test audience reactions were reportedly so overwhelmingly negative towards the game that it made Nintendo apprehensive about actually releasing it, though they would eventually end up doing so the two years later, albeit with very little fanfare at half the price of its intended MSRP.
  • Troubled Production: Everybody 1-2 Switch struggled with focus group testing during its production, to the point that Nintendo of America employees nicknamed the game "Horseshit" (after its horse-mask wearing host) and some questioned if it should be cancelled or given a more limited release, like being sold at a reduced price or given out for free with Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo executives pushed back against these ideas, feeling that the game should not receive anything short of a full, $60 retail release. The former camp apparently won out in the end, as when the title was unceremoniously announced on social media in early June 2023, it was set for release at the end of the month for $30.
