Trivia / Not Going Out

Go To

  • Actor Allusion: A subtle one. In "Art", Lee drops the line "everyone's a comedian" just after fellow comedian Justin Edwards leaves. Considering how many people in single-episode appearances or even walk-on parts were comedians, it's not far from the truth.
    • In a series 2 episode, Lee pretends to be a doctor to get access to Guy's daughter. This is likely a reference to the time Lee Mack bluffed his way into an appointment-booking job at a hospital.
    • In a series 3 episode, Lucy makes a reference to the comedians Cannon and Ball, one of which plays the father of Lee's character.
    • When Tommy Cannon appears in the 2014 Christmas Special as the vicar at Lee and Lucy's wedding, Bobby Ball does his usual schtick of twanging his braces. Cannon promptly tells him to get over it.
  • The Character Died with Him: Bobby Ball died in 2020. In response, the 2021 Christmas Special revealed that his character (Frank) has since passed away.
  • The Danza: Both of the main characters.
  • Hide Your Pregnancy: While pregnant, Sally Bretton had to hide behind props and loose clothing. Such as in "Pointless", where she's seen briefly forgetting where to place her hands and accidentally resting them against her belly before remembering to bring them down by her waist.
  • In Memoriam: The Series 11 finale paid tribute to Bobby Ball, who passed away due to COVID-19 in 2020.
  • The Other Darrin: Tim and Lucy's father was recast between series 3 and 4.
  • The Other Marty: Kate was played by Catherine Tate in the pilot, but was replaced with Megan Dodds because of scheduling issues with The Catherine Tate Show.
  • Playing Against Type: Tim Vine plays the straight man despite his stand-up act being nothing but a stream of puns and one liners.
  • Reality Subtext: In later series Lee and Toby hang out at a cafe rather than a pub. This is because Lee Mack quit drinking after he got fed up with how much of modern life seemed to revolve around alcohol. He even exercised his control over the show by getting Dave to stop airing repeats alongside alcohol adverts.
  • Sending Stuff to Save the Show: Fans successfully got the show Uncanceled in 2010 after a petition and letter-writing campaign.
  • You Look Familiar: Damian Kell has played multiple one-shot characters on the show. He also handles most of the guest characters during table reads and rehearsals up until shooting days.
  • You Sound Familiar: The captain of the eponymous "Plane" (who is only ever heard over the intercom) is voiced by Hugh Dennis, who also plays the regular role of Toby (who is not in that particular episode).
