Trivia / Nightbane

  • Dueling Works: Had a minor but fairly long standing rivalry with The World of Darkness (particularly, the Old or "Classic" version) in the late 90s to early 00s due to both works having similar Urban Fantasy horror settings focusing on a secret society of monsters living in the modern world. This rivalry had mostly died down by the start of the New Tens but some fans of either series still don't get along very well since they see their preferred game as being the superior one and feel that the other is just a cheap imitation or copy.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: The game was originally meant to be named Nightspawn but a quick notice from Todd MacFarlane's lawyer's put a stop to that in a hurry. Not wanting to risk their new RPG in a lengthy and expensive legal battle Palladium quickly changed the name of their new series to "Nightbane" instead and published it under the new title.
  • Sequel Gap: The original book was published in the mid 90s and enjoyed moderate success until the early years of the new millennium where it dropped off the radar with its fourth book Shadows of Light in 2003. The next Nightbane release wouldn't be until 2009's Nightbane Survival Guide revived the series from its long stasis. The series then proceeded to drop off the radar once again and looked like it might have finally been shelved by Palladium in favor of their newer series like Dead Reign. Luckily, a second revival came about with the release of a new book, Dark Designs, in... 2017, nearly ten years later. Only time will tell if the series can manage to avoid yet another trip to the Astral Plane in the coming decades...
