Trivia / New Super Mario Bros. Wii

  • God Never Said That: Despite claims to the contrary, there's no indication that the blue and yellow Toads are named "Bucken-Berry" and "Ala-Gold," respectively. The only statement on the matter comes from an unverified claim by Destructoid writer Jonathan Holmes about an undocumented encounter at Nintendo New York. The fact that "Ala-Gold" is derived from "Allah Gold," the name for Anakin Skywalker in Backstroke of the West, further disproves the veracity of the statement. Nintendo of Japan never stated anything of the sort either.
  • Killer App: Announced and released at a time when sales of the Wii were starting to lag, New Super Mario Bros. Wii became a massive hit at over 30 million copies, boosting sales of the Wii hardware for the 2009 holiday season and being one of the top 20 best-selling video games of all time.
  • No Export for You:
    • Was re-released on the Wii U eShop in Europe, Australia, and Japan, but for some reason never in America.
    • A slightly Updated Re-release of the game was released on December 5, 2017 for the Nvidia Shield TV, featuring high definition 1080p graphics and a slightly redesigned UI, but only in China.
  • Refitted for Sequel:
    • The game's co-op multiplayer, which allows players to pick up and throw one another, was originally created for a prototype to a Super Mario Bros. sequel— later reformatted as Doki Doki Panic, then as an actual Super Mario Bros. 2. The multiplayer was excluded in the finalized versions of both games, meaning that it took roughly 22 years for Nintendo's co-op Mario multiplayer mechanic to finally see use.
    • King Bills were first conceptualized as far back as Super Mario World; development files unearthed from the 2020 Gigaleak included graphics for a behemothic Bullet Bill that takes up the entire screen. The idea would eventually be resurrected and implemented in this game.
  • Short Run in Peru: The game came out in Australia before any other region, unusual for a Mario platformer.
