• Hey, It's That Sound!: The sound played when switching between New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U on the file select screen sounds an awful lot like Kirby getting a Copy Ability.
• Milestone Celebration: This game is part of the "Year of Luigi" celebration, marking the 30th anniversary of Luigi's debut in Mario Bros..
• What Could Have Been: When the developers decided that the theme of the game was to give a 100 second timer to every course, they had trouble beating the courses with such a strict time limit. There were suggestions to make the courses shorter or doubling the timer to 200 seconds, but no one wanted to remake the entire game. The developers came up with the idea of making the timer slower and have it run like a real life timer rather than the faster countdown ticks that most timers in Mario games are known for.
