Trivia / Mega Man X2

Go To

  • Fan Translation: A retranslation ROM hack by Thirteen 1335 is available for the SNES version of the game, and it was expanded upon by the Relocalization Addendum by Jake Nagare.
  • No Port For You: This is the only game in the Mega Man X series to not see a PC release. Until the release of Mega Man X Collection in 2006, it could only be played on the Super Nintendo.
  • Meme Acknowledgment: The official Mega Man Facebook page made a post celebrating this game’s 29th anniversary. The post includes a “moment of reflection” for the Green Biker Dude.
  • Refitted for Sequel: The X-Hunters' designs date back to development of the original Mega Man X, with a trio of would-be main villains existing as sketches. Though Sigma would inherit most of their traits, the designs were later repurposed as separate characters for Mega Man X2.
  • Troubled Production: The game's director, Yoshihisa Tsuda, has openly admitted that the development for X2 was organized chaos. From the team's random experimentation with the Cx4 chip, to cutting a fourth X-Hunter and Violen's second form, to the splash jump technique being left in, it's clear he's not exaggerating.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The game's ending music was originally composed for the final fight with the Sigma Virus. It sounded a bit too mellow, so it got repurposed and a new track was made.
    • There was supposed to be a fourth X-Hunter member who was female (and the group would've been named the "Four Guardians"). Unfortunately, the limited memory size of the SNES mandated her removal. This concept would go on to be revisited in the Mega Man Zero series.
    • Violen would have had a second form with a different fight in the fortress stages, like the other two X-Hunters. A lack of resources resulted in the concept being scrapped along with the fourth X-Hunter, though Violen's rematch retains the name "Neo Violen" in official guidebooks.
    • A boss character contest to design the eight Mavericks (akin to those held for the Mega Man (Classic) series) was considered but rejected, the rationale being that the Mavericks could better reflect the X series' Darker and Edgier tone by not being "cute products of kids' imaginations".
    • According to a tweet by Yoshihisa Tsuda, there were ideas floating around during X2 that Zero could actually be Roll of all characters, who was kidnapped and modified by Wily to serve as a base for his final creation (almost like Quint). This was deemed too hardcore and never went anywhere, as Zero remained his own robot. He's also mentioned that they entertained the idea of X being an upgraded form of Mega Man after all, which nowadays is a point of Common Knowledge.
    • Like the rest of the X series, a Maverick Hunter X2 remake was planned for this game but scrapped. One has to wonder what would've been done to make the X-Hunters more relevant characters; for example, would Serges' connection to Dr. Wily be explored? Also, with the ending of Vile Mode leaving Vile mostly alive, would Vile have returned for a Maverick Hunter X2 as well?
