- While the "Black Thursday" raids of August 17, 1943 were considered particularly costly for the Americans and British, they were also considered something of a disaster for the Luftwaffe, which took substantial losses of their own, while also failing to stop the Allied bombers from striking their targets deep within Germany, and contributing to the suicide of Luftwaffe Chief of Staff Hans Jeschonnek the following day.
