Trivia / Man of Medan

Go To

  • Darkhorse Casting: Especially when compared to the bigger names in Supermassive Games' previous production Until Dawn, Man of Medan uses a cast of relative unknowns, many of whom don't even have Wikipedia articles. The biggest name is Shawn Ashmore as protagonist Conrad, but the rest of the characters are unlikely to be recognized by players.
  • Production Foreshadowing:
    • There are several references to the Salem Witch Trials scattered throughout Man of Medan - from Julia having a book on the subject, to "Salem" being printed on one of Conrad's shirts to one of the victims of the Orang Medan being called "Arthur Miller" (author of The Crucible) - which all foreshadow the plot of the second game in "The Dark Pictures Anthology", Little Hope.
    • A 1940s newspaper on the ship reports that a group of archaeologists have gone missing in Iraq. This refers to the opening set-up of the third game in the series, House of Ashes.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: Like how Until Dawn did a female vocal cover, this game has a rock rendition of the 1920's American Folk song "O Death", covered by Khemmis.
  • What Could Have Been: The game contains data for a cancelled ending that would have branched from the chapter where the protagonists fight with Olson near the falling door. Olson would have run off and the protagonists would have had to confront him one more time. In the ensuing fight, whether the survivors retrieve the distributor cap or not, Olson dies, and the ship is set ablaze. The ending is a nod to the story of the real Ourang Medan, and it also would have given Junior more to do; if he makes it to this scene, he will try to reason with the hallucinating Olson. Thankfully, on September 27, 2022, this was added in a patch.
