- Bowdlerise: A ridiculous example. General Dmitri was played by a Russian actor, and his voice was dubbed in Russian release (by a different actor, no less) because it contained a few (possibly improvised) swear words.
- California Doubling: Cape Town, South Africa doubles for Afghanistan, Bolivia, and Sierra Leone.
- Fake Nationality: Most of the actors, obviously. Nicholas Cage and Jared Leto are clearly not Ukrainian, although they do make an effort at getting the accent right when speaking the language.
- Real-Life Relative: The Ukrainian mechanic who is able to quickly disarm a Mi-24 attack helicopter is played by Nicholas Cage's son, Weston. Thus making Yuri's "Get off there, son, before you hurt yourself!" a bit of a meta-reference. Similarly, Yuri's young son Nicky is played by director Andrew Niccol's son Jack.
- Shout-Out: The sequence where Yuri rents out an entire seaside hotel to impress his love interest is a nod to Once Upon a Time in America, a film with similar themes.
