Trivia / Laff-A-Lympics

Go To

  • Acting for Two: As with quite a few Hanna-Barbera shows of the period, many of the principal actors had other supporting roles. For example:
    • Daws Butler voices Snagglepuss, as well as Yogi Bear, Scooby-Dum, Dastardly Dalton, Huckleberry Hound, Dixie, Mr. Jinks, Hokey Wolf, Quick Draw McGraw, Super Snooper, Blabber Mouse, Augie Doggie and Wally Gator.
    • Don Messick voices the announcer, Scooby-Doo, Boo Boo Bear, Mumbly, Dirty Dalton, Junior Creepley and Pixie.
    • Mildew Wolf, Dread Baron, Doggie Daddy and the Great Fondoo are all played by John Stephenson.
    • Bob Holt voices Grape Ape, Dinky Dalton and Orful Octopus.
    • Brenda Chance and Daisy Mayhem are voiced by Marilyn Schreffler.
    • Mel Blanc voices Captain Caveman, Speed Buggy and Barney Rubble.
    • Frank Welker plays Dynomutt, Tinker, Jabberjaw, Yakky Doodle, Magic Rabbit and Sooey.
    • Casey Kasem was Shaggy and Mr. Creepley.
  • Blooper: One particular example is the Chinese Dragon Race in the New Orleans/Atlantis episode as the racers under the dragon costumes keep changing in lengths, for instance when the Yogis and Scoobys slip on the Rotten's oil slick, there are three racers on each team and by the end of the event, when the Yogis and Scoobys are running for the finish, it looks like every member of all three teams are competing!
  • Marathon Running: At least twice, Cartoon Network ran special Laff-a-Lympics marathons during Olympic Games years.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • The first episode featured Alan Reed's final performance as Fred Flintstone, which he recorded before his death. Subsequent appearances by the character had Henry Corden (Fred's singing voice from The Man Called Flintstone) doing the voice.
    • Frank Welker does Yakky Doodle and Tinker in place of Jimmy Weldon and Phil Luther, Jr. respectively.
    • John Stephenson does Mildew Wolf in place of Paul Lynde.
    • Daws Butler replaces Alan Oppenheimer as Scooby-Dum.
  • Pop-Culture Urban Legends: Several years back, a fangroup created a contest to add a new team to the Laff-a-Lympics. The one that won was called The Dabba Doozeys. A rumor that this was a legit team in development for the series has been edited onto this page over those years, even though one of the most telling give aways is that the image in question features Brainy Smurf and Hefty Smurf as team members years before Hanna-Barbera had the license to make their Smurfs tv show.
  • What Could Have Been: A lot is to be considered here.
    • Dick Dastardly and Muttley were supposed to be the Rotten captains, but issues with Heatter-Quigley (yes, that Heatter-Quigley) prevented that, resulting in the Dread Baron and Mumbly taking their place. Hanna Barbera would later settle this issue and have full use of the characters again by the 1980s even though Mumbly and Dread would have one more outing in Yogi Bear and the Magical Flight of the Spruce Goose. (Ironically with Paul Winchell, Dick Dastardly's voice actor, doing Dread's voice instead of John Stephenson).
    • In this image we see that Alexander, Melody, Alexandra and Sebastian were to be on the Scooby Doobies before the creation of Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels.
    • Jeannie was also to be on the Scooby team, and she is still accounted for in the opening count and appears in one background shot as a Freeze-Frame Bonus, as well as the aforementioned two-page spread.
    • This two-page spread shows Daisy Mayhem as a blonde, and Mrs. Creepley with white hair, although given its age, it could be mismatched inking. This spread is also clearly one of the older configurations of the line up. Jeannie was later dropped from the Scoobies. HKP and Spot woudn't also be referees and HKP would join the Scoobies along with the new Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels. Lastly Cindy Bear was added to the Yogis.
    • A fourteenth issue of the comic book, about a vengeful college professor who makes the Yogis and Rottens shrink to tiny size, went unpublished.
