Trivia / Kull the Conqueror

Go To

  • Box Office Bomb: On top of generally negative critic reviews, the film's theatrical run only made $6.1 million against a $30 million budget.
  • Divorced Installment: It was originally going to be the third Conan the Barbarian movie, but Arnold Schwarzenegger was unavailable at the time. Amusingly, this is the reverse situation of Robert E. Howard's first Conan story, which was an unsold Kull story which he rewrote to be about Conan.
  • Star-Derailing Role: Universal signed Kevin Sorbo to a three-film contract in a bid to turn him into a movie star. However, the film's box-office failure, combined with a shoulder injury on what was to be his second film, Black Dog, ended Universal's goals. The movies Sorbo have made since are low-budget, primarily made for the Christian market, and sometimes don't get theatrical releases.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The movie was supposed to be a straightforward adaptation of The Hour of the Dragon featuring an older Conan as king by his own hand. The movie's plot is more or less the same with Conan being replaced with Kull.
    • The film was also intended to be R-rated, but Kevin Sorbo, in a precursor to his prima-donna antics on the set of Andromeda, demanded it be PG-13, so the more adult material in the script was toned-down to please him.
