Trivia / Kiss of Death

Go To

The 1947 film:

  • Deleted Role: Originally, Patricia Morison appeared onscreen as Nick's wife Maria, who's attacked and raped by a gangster who is supposed to be watching out for her while Nick is in prison, and shortly thereafter commits suicide by sticking her head in the kitchen oven and turning on the gas. Both scenes were cut from the original print at the insistence of the Hays Office, which wanted no depiction of either a rape or a suicide, so she does not appear in the film at all. Mention is made later in the film about Maria's suicide and an indirect statement is made by Nettie that the unseen gangster Rizzo contributed to her downfall.
  • Referenced by...: Ramona Norville in "Big Driver", by Stephen King, is a fan of this movie and is especially fond of Richard Widmark's performance.
  • Star-Making Role: Tommy Udo, for Richard Widmark; it was his screen debut, and literally made him a star overnight. Mention his name, and the staircase scene is what most people will think of. (That is, if they don't think of Lucy Ricardo trying to seal his grapefruit first.)
  • Uncredited Role: Mildred Dunnock, as Mrs. Rizzo; Eva Condon, as the nun at the orphanage.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • James Cagney was originally signed to play Nick Bianco. He backed out after realizing that Richard Widmark's Udo was the better part.
    • Richard Conte had been the first choice to play Tommy Udo.
