Trivia / Joey Ryan

Go To

  • Fan Community Nickname: The 87%ers.
  • He Also Did: He's appeared in a lot of TV shows and internet videos. This is probably due to him being a member of the Screen Actors' Guild.
    • He was the 80s All-American Babyface archetype in "Wrestling Isn't Wrestling" by Max Landis.
    • Appeared in an episode of season one of GLOW, wrestling a match against Alex Riley. He played a Ted DiBiase-style character, whilst Alex Riley played a biker.
    • Appeared in a video by Snapchat about male sexual anatomy.
    • Appeared out of character in an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race. The episode's challenge was that the drag queens had to create wrestling personas and wrestle matches. He was one of the queens' wrestling trainers.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: The #SpeakingOut movement in 2020 had many fans and colleagues accusing him of sexual assault and other felonies. This tanked his career and made him a pariah, also forcing him to close his promotion Bar Wrestling.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: Delays in airing of Lucha Underground's seasons, alongside contractual stipulations preventing him from appearing on television until the complete Lucha Underground season had aired combined with a reluctance to release wrestlers from contracts despite the increasingly unlikeliness of a Lucha Underground Season five, few dates booked under the Lucha Underground banner besides and unsatisfactory concessions made for season four caused Ryan to band together with King Cuerno, Ivelisse VĂ©lez and Kobra Moon to successfully force Lucha Underground to release them from their contracts in 2019.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The penis spot in Dramatic Dream Team was a huge risk and could have backfired very horribly for Joey. There was a fine line between it being perceived by fans as awesome or as something Vince Russo would have dreamed up in late 90s WCW. Thankfully, it went down very well on the night.
    • He started wrestling in UPW, a feeder promotion for the then WWE-owned OVW. This was the same promotion that launched the careers of Samoa Joe and John Cena. Imagine if WWE had shown enough interest in him to bring him to OVW...
    • After his stint in UPW, he went to train at a NJPW sponsored dojo under Brian Danielson. Again, imagine if NJPW had shown enough interest in him...
