Trivia / I Shouldn't Be Alive

  • California Doubling:
    • Though many of the episodes are filmed in the same locations as the actual real life cases, some episodes were filmed in similar environments elsewhere, for a number of obvious practicality and logistics related reasons. Most episodes filmed elsewhere manage to hide this really well, some are a bit more haphazard in the accuracy.
    • The lush island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean serves as a double for the Mexican island of Cozumel in "Lost in the Jungle", as revealed in the episode's credits. While it makes for pretty scenery, it leads to a bit of dishonesty, in that it doesn't properly represent the sort of terrain on Cozumel. Cozumel has a much smaller rainforest compared to Réunion, and also lacks the tall cliffs and depressions seen in the episode's aerial panning shots.
    • In addition to "Avalanche of Terror", an episode set and actually filmed in the Transylvanian Alps of the Romanian Carpathians in the winter, "Blizzard of Death", the preceding episode set in the snow-covered mountains of Kyrgyzstan, also uses winter filming locations in the Romanian Carpathians to stand in for very similar terrain in the high, snow-bound Kyrgyz ranges. Kyrgyzstan's wild sheep are added to some of the shots via brief stock footage from Central Asia. Though the cast of the episode features actors of central Asian descent as stand-ins for Kyrgyz guides, you can notice the rescue helicopter is a French-designed Puma (also common in Romania, license-built there in the past), rather than the more likely Russian-built Mi-8 or similar heavy helicopter from the original case. Funnily enough, that same Puma helicopter, in very similar colours, is also shown briefly in the actual Romanian winter episode, in a hallucination by the lost hiker hoping the Romanian mountain rescue service finds him.
  • Dueling Shows: With I Survived, which aired on the Biography Channel. To the point, where at least one story from this show—"Shark Survivor"— was featured on I Survived too. The only difference is that the latter show featured crime victims as well.
