• California Doubling: The film was shot on Hollywood backlots, not in Colorado, Kansas, or Missouri.
• Creator's Favorite: Samuel Fuller made it clear that he preferred Bob Ford over Jesse James, mostly because of the former’s sympathetic background when compared to the brutal outlaw Jesse historically was.
• Dawson Casting: John Ireland plays both 20 year old and 30 year old Robert Ford (Ireland was 35 at the time), and Preston Foster plays both 25 year old and 35 year old John Kelley (despite being almost 50 at the time).
