Trivia / House of Gucci

Go To

  • All-Star Cast: Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino.
  • Approval of God: The real Patrizia Reggiani (who was released from prison in 2016) approved of Lady Gaga playing her, describing her as a "genius". However, she was annoyed that Gaga wasn't allowed to meet or contact her by the production, due to the producers not wanting to "endorse or support an awful crime".
  • Channel Hop: Similarly to a number of other Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films (who distributed the film in the United States) released in 2021, it was released in overseas territories by Universal.
  • Creator Backlash: Not the harshest words, but Salma Hayek's dialect coach Francesca De Martini went on record saying Lady Gaga's accent sounded more Russian than Italian.
  • Disowned Adaptation:
    • Patricia Gucci (Maurizio's second cousin) told the Associated Press, in the name of the family, that they were "truly disappointed" by the project. "They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system." She added: "Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything, but there is a borderline that cannot be crossed". According to Gucci, the three central concerns of the family are the lack of contact with Ridley Scott, the alleged inaccuracies in the book on which the film is based, and the casting of high-profile actors to play people who weren't connected with the murder. She also said that the Gucci family will decide what their next course of action will be after watching the completed film. Reportedly, they found it "extremely painful" and "an insult".
    • Tom Ford (who is played in the film by Reeve Carney) penned an essay about the film in which he compared watching it to surviving a hurricane, admitting he felt uncertain about whether or not the film was supposed to be a farcical depiction of the family or not, criticizing the inaccurate depictions of Aldo and Paolo Gucci and comparing Jared Leto and Al Pacino's performances to "a Saturday Night Live version of the tale". Not helping matters at all is that in real life, he's an accomplished director as well, having directed A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals so he knows a thing or two about performances.
  • Fake Nationality: None of the actors portraying members of the Gucci family are Italians, although Lady Gaga and Al Pacino are of Italian descent. Similarly, Pina Auriemma is played by the Mexican Salma Hayek and Domenico De Sole is played by the British/American Jack Huston.
  • Method Acting: Lady Gaga never dropped Patrizia's Italian accent for the entire nine month shoot.
  • Production Posse: This is Ridley Scott's second consecutive film with Adam Driver after The Last Duel (released just over a month prior to this). He also worked with Jeremy Irons previously on Kingdom of Heaven.
  • Saved from Development Hell: Scott first began developing the project in 2006, with Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio rumoured for the lead roles. In 2012, Scott's daughter Jordan was going to direct with Penélope Cruz starring. Over the next decade, little progress would be made as several other directors, writers, and actors would become attached to the project before it Scott began pursuing it again in 2019, this time with Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, and began fast-tracking it as his follow-up project to The Last Duel.
  • Throw It In!: The famous "Father, son, and House of Gucci" line Patrizia says while making a cross was ad-libbed by Lady Gaga. According to Ridley Scott, Gaga made many character-appropriate and interesting ad-libs that ended up on the cutting room floor due to time, but the cross and Title Drop were too good to leave out.
  • Underage Casting:
    • Patrizia Reggiani was 47 in 1995, and she's played by a 35 year old Lady Gaga.
    • Maurizio Gucci was 46 when he was murdered, Adam Driver was 37 when he did the film.
    • 49 year old Jared Leto as 64 year old Paolo Gucci.
  • Wag the Director: Lady Gaga revealed that she pushed for a lesbian sex scene with Salma Hayek. It ended up on the cutting room floor, but it may appear in a Director's Cut.
