- Box Office Bomb: Budget, $9.3 million. Box office, $10 million. This was one of several Columbia Pictures films acquired by outgoing president David Puttnam that the studio left in limited release. The studio took a $105 million write-off due to the failure of Puttnam's slate. This was also overshadowed by the release of Empire of the Sun, which was also based on a semi-autobiographical account of a British boy's experiences during World War II.
- Dueling Works: With Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun. Both involve British kids surviving through World War II. Both got critical acclaim, but due to having Spielberg attached, though, Empire was the winner at the box office.
- Real-Life Relative: Two of John Boorman's children are in the film - Katrine Boorman is Bill's Aunt Charity, and Charley Boorman is a ditched Luftwaffe pilot.
- What Could Have Been: Trevor Howard was originally cast as Grandfather George.
- Write What You Know: This was based on John Boorman's experiences of growing up in World War II.
