Trivia / His and Her Circumstances

  • Acting for Two:
    • In the Japanese version:
      • Besides voicing Hiroyuki Miyazawa, Takeshi Kusao played the narrator in episode 24.
      • In addition to voicing Mr. Kawashima, Motomu Kiyokawa served as the narrator for episodes 16, 25 and 26.
      • Junko Noda, Maho Izawa's regular voice actress, played the younger Hiroyuki Miyazawa.
    • Several of the English dub's principal actors voice secondary roles in addition to their main ones. For example:
      • Hiromi Ikeda and Ryoko are voiced by Kelli Shayne Butler.
      • Mr. Arima, Pero Pero and Ushio are voiced by Bill Rogers.
      • Miyako Miyazawa, Iwata and Aya Sawada are all voiced by Rachael Lillis.
      • Oliver Wyman voices both Kei Arima and Hiroyuki Miyazawa.
      • Tsukino Miyazawa and Ishikawa are both played by Jessica Calvello.
      • Liam O'Brien plays Hideaki Asaba, Kouhei Fukada and Martin.
      • Ted Lewis voices Atsuya, Hiroyuki's grandfather and Saito.
      • Kazuma Ikeda and Miyako's father are both voiced by Buddy Woodward.
  • Completely Different Title: Outside of Japan and North America, the series is titled Tales at North Hills High.
  • Creative Differences: During the anime's production, creator Masami Tsuda wanted a balance of the romance and comedy while director Hideaki Anno wanted to emphasize the comedy more than the romance. The differences got so bad that Tsuda said she wanted Anno out, which led Anno to quit mid-series. Even though animation producer Hiroki Sato tried rescuing the show, it was still Cut Short at the end of its only season.
  • Disowned Adaptation: Tsuda was unsatisfied with how the anime adaptation turned out due to Gainax changing of several elements of her original manga and emphasizing the comedic aspects. It got to the point where Anno quit towards the end of the series.
  • He Also Did: Buddy Woodward, who voiced Kazuma Ikeda and Miyako's father in the English dub, has been playing with the American folk group, The Kingston Trio, since 2022.
  • Hostility on the Set: When the anime was being produced, Hideaki Anno frequently clashed with Masami Tsuda over the changes to the latter's storylines. Anno was also frustrated with TV Tokyo's then-recent guidelines to watch the show in a well-lit room and to not sit too close to the screen. He eventually left mid-series after Tsuda demanded his dismissal.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The manga was previously licensed in English by Tokyopop, but their editions haven't seen a re-release since 2008.
  • Portmanteau Series Nickname: The full title is Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, shortened as "Kare Kano".
  • Real-Life Relative: In the Italian dub, Federica De Bortoli voiced Yukino Miyazawa, while her older sister Barbara De Bortoli voiced her mother Miyako.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: The ending, "Yume no Naka e", released by Yousui Inoue in 1973 and made known to the generation that watched the show by Yuki Saitou in 1989. Arguably Covered Up again for overseas anime fans, who only know it as "the duet from Kare Kano".
  • Screwed by the Network: Once Anno left as director due to the Creative Differences with Tsuda and his frustrations with TV Tokyo's guidelines, the anime was unable to be renewed for a second season, so flashback episodes had to be made. Anno would never work with TV Tokyo again.
  • Star-Making Role: For Chihiro Suzuki as Arima and Atsuko Enomoto as Yukino.
  • Troubled Production: The anime was plagued with Gainax's usual time and budgeting issues from the get-go, with numerous uses of Limited Animation and frequent recaps of the story's plot even early on. After the Creative Differences between Tsuda and Anno came to a head and Anno quit as director, the series spent its last seven or eight episodes almost literally spinning its wheels, unsure where to go or how to get there. This is why there are three Recap Episodes and one episode where all the characters are depicted as colorless paper cutouts instead of being fully animated. Although Sato tried getting the production back on track, it still wound up with No Ending.
