- Actor Allusion: From the Drama CD, Kobato once utters "Guard Skill: Hand Sonic", and Maria quotes Touma's Catchphrase word for word, culminating in a headbite akin to that often done by Index (who shares the same voice actress as her). The Squid Girl Shout Outs are a combination of this and Ascended Meme, due to the Ika Musume parody in To Aru Majutsu no Index-tan Episode 3.
- No Export for You: While the series' anime and manga adaptations are both available in English, the original light novels have yet to be made available outside Japan.
- Portmanteau Series Nickname: Boku Tomo or Haganai. Yes, HAganai. It's made up of the particles in the title as opposed to the main words, and when "wa" is used as a particle, it's actually spelled with a "ha" character.
- Running the Asylum: An incredibly fast example, as the alternate "Plus" manga seems to be written by a Kodaka/Sena shipper. It turned Yozora into an even bigger bitch than before. The Die for Our Ship elements are particularly jarring given that Yozora wasn't comfortable with the concept of romance in the first place, and wanted to be just friends anyhow. Thus it was a ship that sunk itself.
- Torch the Franchise and Run: Hirasaka's ongoing problems with his publisher and editors, along with his increasing frustration with a certain audience of readers who were solely focused on the romantic side of the series, caused him to end the novel with No Romantic Resolution and only a hint of a relationship going forward.
