  • Box Office Bomb: Grossed $2,390,000 out of a $3,288,000 budget.
  • California Doubling: Mel Ferrer traveled to South America to select possible filming locations, but eventually concluded that the jungles there were too dense and dark to allow their use in the action sequences of the film. He managed to arrange for nearly an hour of jungle footage to be filmed in Venezuela (in the south of Orinoco and in the Parahauri Mountains), much of which was incorporated into the film. The action sequences were filmed on indoor stages and at Lone Pine, California.
  • Fake Nationality:
    • The American Anthony Perkins as the Venezuelan Abel.
    • The American (of Sicilian and Spanish descent) Henry Silva as the South American native tribesman Kua-Ko.
    • Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa as chief Runi from the same tribe as the above.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Vincente Minnelli was originally slated to direct, but delays in the project led Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to pick up Mel Ferrer instead.
    • The film was intended to be the first of several projects directed by Ferrer and starring his wife Audrey Hepburn, but ultimately it was the only one.
