• Creator Backlash: Arturo Pérez-Reverte, who wrote the film's original idea, went to criticize harshly the film, denying that the final product was what he was aiming to. In particular, he accused the producers of twisting his work and giving a fallaciously unflattering portrayal of the Spaniards.
  "In the script there were both cruelty and epic, hardness and light; when they made the film, the team did not see the epic and instead only gave out a gang of delinquents. The admirable part disappeared."
• Irony as She Is Cast: Juan José Ballesta, a real life Former Child Star who once snapped and left acting temporarily due to the perils of fame, plays here a explicitly glory-seeking soldier. In fact, he went to have another hiatus after the film due to an acrimonious and publicized divorce.
• Troubled Production: According to the cast, the film's shooting in the Colombian jungle was as much of an adventure as the film itself. José Coronado (who played Bastaurrés) had to shoot through several scenes with a painfully injured eye due to having got pine processionary's poisonous hair in his cornea, and Raúl Arévalo (Dávila) said they endured so many other complications that by the end of the shooting they felt like a team of real soldiers, which adds Reality Subtext to the film.
