• Ability over Appearance: The single issue most fans seem to take with Charles Dance as Vetinari is that he's as blonde as he is in any of his other roles, which is functionally the polar opposite of the iconically black-haired Vetinari of the books. With that said, those same fans almost universally agree that he lives and breathes Vetinari otherwise.
• Accent Depundent: American readers may not get part of the joke about Vetinari's "Dark Clerks" as the two words don't rhyme in American pronunciation ("dark clurks" whereas in British pronunciation it would be said "Dark Clarks" like the name).
• Creator Cameo: As became standard in the TV adaptations, Sir Pterry appears at the very end. Complete with a reference to The Embuggerance.
• Incidental Multilingual Wordplay: The French version of this book was titled "Timbré", which means "stamped", but is also a colloquial word for "crazy". The Bulgarian version was titled "Пощоряване", which is a pun on "going crazy"(пощуряване) and the word for "mail"(поща).
• Life Imitates Art: In the book, the inventor of the semaphore network is memorialized with a message consisting of just his name with the prefix "GNU", sent continually back and forth across the system, based on the old saying that "A man's not dead while his name is still spoken." In real life, members of the Terry Pratchett fan groups on Facebook do this now when a friend or relative dies. GNU STP.
• Playing Against Type: David Suchet, known best for his longtime portrayal of Hercule Poirot, who is a thoroughly moral and pleasant detective with a dash of Obfuscating Stupidity, here gives a chilling portrayal of the villainous Reacher Gilt.
