Trivia / Get Out (2017)

Go To

  • Acting in the Dark: The extras at the barbecue didn't know much about the plot, but were told to act like they were vampires and Chris was somebody they wanted to eat.
  • Ascended Fanon:
  • Completely Different Title:
    • Hong Kong: Scary Visit
    • Spain: Let Me Out
    • Ukraine: Trap
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: The first critic to give the film a negative Rotten Tomatoes score, knocking it out of 100%, was Armond White, infamous in the film community for his oft-contrarian opinions. In the first draft of the review online (before it was edited), White said that Andre (who is strangled in the intro) never shows up again. Andre shows up again in a Signature Scene of the movie: him waking up temporarily from the Sunken Place and yelling at Chris to GET OUT. To say he doesn't show up again means either White didn't recognize him or he wasn't watching the movie that closely.
  • Creator's Oddball:
    • It's easy to forget now that horror is Jordan Peele's bag, but at the time the film released, he was mostly known for his comedy. His directorial debut being a horror film with strong elements of social satire (although there's still a fair amount of comedy) was not what people expected.
    • On a more minor note: we get a long stretch of "Redbone" from Childish Gambino when we are introduced to Chris. Childish Gambino himself was a rapper up until Awaken, My Love!, the album "Redbone" comes from, which veers off into soul and funk. And of course, Donald Glover is primarily an actor, with his music career as Childish Gambino being a sort of side gig.
  • Enforced Method Acting:
    • An accidental case: Bradley Whitford (Dean Armitage) admitted a couple years after the film's release that he didn't realize "I would have voted for Obama a third time if I could" was meant to be a condescending "limousine liberal" line, and he delivered it sincerely because he really thought it was a genuinely kind sentiment (and fully acknowledges how much this makes him one of the film's targets).
    • Allison Williams avoided the cast to get into character as Rose, which was difficult for her as she felt very close to them, particularly Daniel Kaluuya, who played Chris.
  • Fake American: British actor Daniel Kaluuya plays Chris with an American accent.
  • I Am Not Spock: Daniel Kaluuya said he does not want to be constantly burdened by being a representative of black people after his role in this movie.
  • Inspiration for the Work: Jordan Peele mentioned that the inspiration for the movie came from the populace proclaiming racism was over after Barack Obama was elected president.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: The deer skeleton, which was especially disappointing for fans as there was much speculation about how it fit into the story.
  • Role Reprise: Peele and Spike Jonze both confirmed that Missy is Maxine Lund from Being John Malkovich.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Catherine Keener and Allison Williams certainly pass as mother and daughter.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The film was originally going to end with Chris choking Rose to death and being incarcerated by the police at the end, unable to remember anything that might help him get out of prison (as the house burned down, destroying any other evidence). Rod tries to help Chris remember some details, but Chris seems resigned to his fate, and can only take comfort in that he stopped the Coagula operation and faced his own demons. The ending was instead changed to Rod being revealed as the driver of the police car, because Jordan Peele wanted a more escapist ending in the wake of/out of respect for the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown. There was also a very early spitball ending where Rod goes to the community to rescue Chris, only for the latter to say to the former, "I don't know who you're talking about."
    • At one point, Peele considered playing with Dramatic Irony by revealing to the audience from the beginning that Rose was in on the entire scheme, but instead opted to keep her involvement a secret for an Evil All Along reveal.
    • Peele approached Tiffany Haddish to audition for the film after they worked together on Keanu, possibly as Georgina, but she turned it down because she was too afraid of horror movies.
    • A line was removed from the ending; after tackling Chris, Roman originally would've shouted, "I finally beat you, Jesse!". Peele figured it would be too over-the-top and the audience wouldn't get the subtext anyway.
    • The line at the beginning where Chris says that he hopes Dean won't chase him out with a shotgun was originally going to be "rifle" to add extra meaning when Rose chases him out of the house with a rifle, but since shoehorning the word felt too awkward, he made it "shotgun" instead.
    • As presented in the film, the Sunken Place is a neverending, silent void. In the film's original script and existing storyboards, it's revealed that there were plans early on to incorporate a floor within the Sunken Place as well as sound, judging by Chris originally having lines while he's in there.
Chris: (terrified) No! NO!!! I'm done! Bring me back! Please!!!!
    • When Chris is tied up in the climax, Roman Armitage did not originally appear to offer background about the Coagula procedure. The script had Jim Hudson explaining everything.
