Trivia / Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Likely an in universe example, as Matt Berry voices the cat in the first episode, while Alice Lowe does some of the announcements over the PA. Given the No Budget nature of Darkplace, it's entirely possible Garth had Todd Rivers and Madeleine Wool double up.
  • The Danza: The hospital porter, while nameless in the show, is portrayed in universe by an actor named Graham, who is played by Graham Linehan.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Alice Lowe said in a Q&A years later that the whole cast was so new to television acting that they were often genuinely unsure of what they were supposed to be doing, and were desperately hoping that the network would find it funny, which explains some of the awkwardness of the acting. Matthew Holness noted in the same Q&A that the fact that they were shooting on film was an advantage, because they couldn't do endless takes: if they messed up a take, they were sometimes obliged to use it in the final show anyway.
Matthew Holness: [pointing to the screen behind him] So a lot of that stuff's genuine.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: There is no US home-video release of the series despite its runs on Syfy and [adult swim].
  • Playing Against Type: Matt Berry, just starting out his career, stars as level-headed Only Sane Man Todd Rivers. For comparison, the same exact year he also starred as Dixon Bainbridge, which is exactly the sort of pompous, outrageous windbag role that would define Berry's career. Ironically enough, the role of Bainbridge was meant for Richard Ayoade, but Ayoade couldn't get out of his contract to Channel 4 (the channel that aired Darkplace), so Berry stepped in and took the role over.
  • Screwed by the Network: Ironically, both in-universe and in Real Life. In-universe, the show was pulled for a rerun of Who's the Boss? In Real Life, little or no advertising was given for the show and it was given a late night airing slot.
  • Star-Making Role: This show helped Matt Berry become a big star as this was his first acting gig.
  • What Could Have Been: Apparently, a movie version was requested, but has yet to see the light of day.
