Trivia / Garry's Mod

Go To

  • Breakthrough Hit: The success of GMod is the reason why Facepunch as a company was able to form and make other games, such as Rust.
  • Colbert Bump:
    • SeaNanners caused this after shifting to more Gmod-based content.
    • The game enjoyed a small, but noticeable, increase in players after the Yogscast included it in their Humble Bundle for the 2013 Christmas charity drive.
    • Later, in 2022, the game saw in increase in popularity via YouTubers and TikTok users recording themselves running away from Nextbot NPCs.
  • Defictionalization: In 2014, replicas of the Tool Gun were produced as a part of a limited run.
  • Fanwork Ban: While not banned outright, as they can still be downloaded from other sites with no issue, NSFW addons (such as explicitly nude models or textures) are not allowed the Gmod workshop.
  • In Memoriam: The June 2020 update, as part of an Official Fan-Submitted Content contest for new menu backgrounds, added such a background consisting of a lone gallon hat and guitar laying on a chair in a dark room - a tribute to Kitty0706, who had died of leukemia in January 2015.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: While Garry's Mod itself is still widely distributed, this is a common occurrence with Game Mods. Most addons are downloaded through the Steam Workshop, which regulates your access to them; if an addon is taken down from the Workshop for whatever reason, it will vanish from the player's collection of subscribed addons. When this happens, expect other community members to reupload the addon in question, with or without the author's permission.
  • Referenced by...:
    • In the climax of the movie Free Guy, Guy uses the Physics Gun in a fight that includes various other references. Garry himself even tweeted about it.
    • People Playground features the Physics Gun as a tool for the player to use.
    • In Henry Stickmin: Fleeing the Complex, the player can select the Tool Gun in one route. Selecting it causes Henry to open the console and noclip out of the prison, before he is "banned" on a VAC-esque screen.
    • In ULTRAKILL, gm_construct is featured as the default map for the Sandbox gamemode. It was actually added to the game with Garry's permission, on the grounds that the original textures would not be used (as they were made by Valve).
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: HogwartsRP was shut down to the disappointment of many after Facepunch received a takedown notice from Warner Bros..
  • Throw It In!: At one point, Father Grigori was mistakenly put in the "animals" NPC section, but Garry found it amusing due to just how accurate that was, and let Grigori stay in the animals section.
  • Urban Legend of Zelda: Garry's Mod spawns a lot of this even to this day.
    • The infamous dark room in every iteration of gm_construct garnered a lot of fan theories about "something that lurks within", with some suspecting that it might be supernatural in nature, though the room is actually intended for testing out lights. Ditto with the earlier version of the lake, where the water is so murky and hard to see through that many players believed that the pond's deep is endless.
    • Ghostly figures sighting on gm_construct, rp_downtown_v2 and various other roleplay maps like rp_bangclaw, who've been rumoured that it will occasionally appear in empty servers. It has been debunked several times and any instances of them appearing are revealed to be a hoax.
    • When spawning in the bouncy balls, there is a rumor where a grey ball can occasionally spawn, netting an achievement called "Finally, a grey one!" While it has obviously been disproven (Steam shows all of the game's achievements, with this one never appearing), this has been subject to various memes.
