Trivia / FleshEater

Go To

  • Actor Allusion: FleshEater is directed by Bill Hinzman and has him playing the main zombie. Hinzman is perhaps best known for his role as the cemetery zombie from George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968). The film even has a few Shout-Outs to the latter.
  • Copiously Credited Creator: As noted on the main page, Hinzman wrote, produced, edited, directed, and starred in the film.
  • The Danza: Quite a few actors share first names with the character they play:
    • The little girl dressed as an angel is named Heidi and is played by Heidi Hinzman.
    • The couple in the farmhouse, David and Jackie, are played by David and Jackie Sodergren
    • Two attendees of the college Halloween party, Steve (karate guy) and Andy (Dracula) are played by Steven B. Sands and Andrew Sands.
    • Vincent Survinski plays a posse member named Vince.
  • Dawson Casting: The actors playing the teens don't look like they're under 21.
  • Edited for Syndication: When the film hit British video store shelves in 1993 under the title Zombie Nosh, 1 minute and 41 seconds were cut from the film by the British Board of Film Classification. The excised footage was the scene of the Flesheater ripping a girl's heart out and the later scene where he forces his hand through another girl, the Fanservice girl being chased around the bedroom by the Flesheater and being bitten, and shots of the now-zombified girl eating what's left of her father. All cut footage was put back into the film for it's 2003 UK DVD release.
  • Enforced Method Acting: The scene where the Flesheater rips out and eats a girls heart was intended to use an edible plastic cast of a pigs heart but due to a problem with the cast, they were forced to use the real heart. Before there was a chance to tell Bill, the scene was shot and Bill ended up taking a bite out of the real heart.
    • A behind-the-scenes example occured as well; while shooting the scene where the little angel girl zombie is put down, the cameraman was accidentally shot in the foot by the cardboard plug of a blank round that had been made more powerful than usual. Fortunately, the result was merely a slightly injured foot and a shoe with a hole in it.
    • While fending off the Flesheater, one of the teens grabs a fairly large branch and whacks it in the back, causing it to groan loudly and then double over, seemingly in pain. Seeing as all future physical attacks have no effect on the Flesheater, Bill Hinzman likely wasn't acting after being hit.
  • No Budget: Supposedly, as there aren't really any official sources to confirm it, the budget for the movie was around $60,000.
  • Real-Life Relative: Several members of the cast and crew are relatives;
    • Bill, Bonnie, and Heidi Hinzman play the Flesheater, the mother preparing candied apples, and her daughter dressed as an angel respectively.
    • The couple at the farmhouse are played by real-life husband and wife couple Jackie and David Sodergren.
    • The karate guy and vampire at the party are played by two brothers, Steven and Andrew Sands.
  • Role Reprise: In addition to Bill Hinzman pretty much reprising his role as Night of the Living Dead's cemetery zombie, Vincent Survinski again plays a posse member who once again kills innocent survivors while mistaking them for zombies.
