• Follow the Leader: A work showing what it's like behind-the-scenes at a ballet company—the long hours, endless practices and drills, desperate measures to stay thin, damaged feet, catfighting among the dancers, etc. An aging prima ballerina terrified that she's going to be replaced any day now. A neophyte ballerina rapidly becoming the envy of the others while grappling with major issues of her own. A tyrannical and temperamental artistic director who alternates between praising, seducing, and berating his subjects. This could have been called Black Swan—The Series—all the aforementioned characters are practically Expies of their film counterparts.
• Queer Character, Queer Actor: The bisexual Paul Grayson is played by Ben Daniels, who is gay.
• Stunt Double: Averted. The producers sought out real ballet dancers to avoid having to use body doubles in the dance scenes. Interestingly, several of them worked on the film Black Swan, which many critics have compared the series to and even suspect is its inspiration.
