  • California Doubling: The factory scenes in the first parts of the film were shot in Southern England. Apparently, not many period facilities remain in the US. Dubuque, Iowa doubled for the Cleveland of the 1930's. In the 1970s Dubuque was said to look more like Cleveland of the 1930s than Cleveland itself did due to all the television antennas in Cleveland. The geography around Dubuque made receiving television signals over the air problematic for many residents, so Dubuque developed a cable TV system in the 1950s - which was far earlier than most other locations in the United States - and as a result there were far fewer TV aerials to cover up.
  • Creator Backlash: Norman Jewison once said of this movie in an interview: "Somehow I failed. Maybe it was the casting".
  • One-Take Wonder: The scene where the company sign was pulled down in front of the factory could only be filmed once. They only had one sign, which could not be replaced if it was damaged.
  • What Could Have Been: Robert De Niro was offered the lead role. Ironically he'd play a man who supposedly had a hand in the disappearance of Johnny Novak's real life counterpart in The Irishman, forty-one years later.
