• Creator Backlash:
  • Adam Warren is not fond of Emp's costume design. In its undamaged state, he finds it laborious to render and visually dull. The first few title pages of Volume 1 show less and less of Emp's torso each time.
  • The commentary from Warren on the website includes embarrassment at transphobic jokes in early Volume 1 and Emp getting stripped and assaulted in Volume 2.
• Schedule Slip: While never having a formal release schedule, the space between new volumes has increased over time. This is often attributed to drawing-arm issues experienced by Adam Warren and the highly time-intensive art style the comics require. The early volumes came out about six months apart but later volumes dropped to a typical gap of two years up to Volume 11 (in September 2019). Volume 12 was scheduled for release in June 2023 (almost four years later) but the publication date has been pushed back several times and it is currently set for release in November 2024.
• Sequel Gap: Volume 11 came out in 2019 and volume 12 is coming out in 2024.
• Writer Revolt: Empowered evolved from a series of bondage art commissions Warren was doing; he subverted the job by developing the characters he was using, and things snowballed.
