Trivia / Dragon Quest VIII

  • Incidental Multilingual Wordplay: At one point, Yangus mentions he noticed something while he was picking his nose... picking some flowers. It works both way, as "Hana" is both the Japanese word for "Nose" and "Flower" and in English, picking is something you can do to both one's nose and to flowers. The Pun pun translates into both languages. Though the pun used is different, the joke is the same.
  • Market-Based Title: This was the first Dragon Quest game released in Europe so they took a page out of Square's old playbook and ditched the VIII, making the game's title Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King.
  • Network to the Rescue: Nintendo stepped in to publish the 3DS remake of this game as well as VII after both had been released in Japan for so long. Nintendo of America’s Treehouse was responsible for the translations of the new scenes in the game.
  • Newbie Boom: Due to this being Europe's first mainline Dragon Quest game, a lot of new players from there were introduced to the series.
  • Role Reprise: In the Japanese 3DS release, Ayana Taketatsu and Fumihiko Tachiki reprise their roles as Jessica and Yangus, respectively, from Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and The Blight Below.
  • What Could Have Been: Marcello's design was originally intended to be Angelo's, but was made into a separate character after it was deemed too shifty-looking to belong to a protagonist.
