Go To

  • Dueling Games: With Bayonetta 3, similar to the dual between the first Darksiders and Bayonetta games - both are the third entry in their respective series of religious-themed Hack and Slash games, with Darksiders III now introducing a female character as its playable lead. There's also console rivalry (Darksiders III was released on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but the Nintendo Switch, whereas Bayonetta 3 is Switch-exclusive), as well as the fact that Bayonetta developer PlatinumGames was interested in buying the Darksiders series when it was auctioned off by THQ. However, this has largely died down as Bayonetta 3 was released nearly four years after Darksiders III; additionally, a port of III arrived on the Switch in September 2021, further downplaying any rivalry between the titles.
  • Saved from Development Hell: Publisher THQ closed down in April 2013, with all video game development ceasing, and its intellectual properties auctioned off; series developer Vigil Games was also shut down. Purchased by Nordic Games (eventually becoming THQ Nordic), Darksiders III was left in limbo for five years until May 2017, when online retailer Amazon leaked a product listing for the Sequel. THQ Nordic officially announced its return, developed by Gunfire Games, comprised of ex-Vigil Games staff members who worked on the previous games, set for a 2018 release.
  • Sequel Gap: 6 years between this game and the second one.
  • What Could Have Been: Some of the video game developers interested in purchasing the series was PlatinumGames and Crytek USA.
