• Actor-Inspired Element: Pierce Brosnan used his own camera for a scene where Harry investigates the volcano surroundings.
• Awesome, Dear Boy: Roger Donaldson was attracted to direct because he had previously been a geology student, and already had a working knowledge of volcanoes.
• Box Office Bomb: Budget, $116 million. Box office, $67,127,760 (domestic), $178.1 million (worldwide).
• California Doubling: While nearly all shot on location in Idaho, the USGS's headquarters were filmed in California while taking place in Washington.
• Dueling Movies: With Volcano, another Disaster Movie on the same subject released around the same time, where a volcano erupts in the middle of Los Angeles. Discovery Channel Canada's science news show: @discovery.ca had a volcanologist review both movies. Dante's Peak got a 'C', Volcano got an 'F'. The box office also came out in its favor, with a 20 Mil edge in the ending gross.
• Friendship on the Set: Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton became good friends while working on the film, although this was the only time they worked together.
• Production Posse: Producer Gale Anne Hurd had previously worked with Linda Hamilton on The Terminator and its first sequel.
• What Could Have Been: Michael Douglas was originally set to play the lead.
