Tear Jerker / Dante's Peak

As a Moments subpage, all spoilers are unmarked. You have been warned.

  • It was intended to be one: Ruth's repentance after sealing her own fate in the Heroic Sacrifice of hopping out of the boat and into the acid lake to push the boat the last few feet to the dissolving dock, and getting 3rd degree acid burns from the waist down, but she caused the problem that led to her sacrifice, so YMMV for real with whether it's sad or just a cranky old bat getting her comeuppance for mistreating her daughter in law.
  • The sequence as the main cast drives through what's left of the town is certainly a Tear Jerker. Rachel laments that it took eight years to get the town to where it was. Only for it to be flattened within eighteen hours.
  • Paul's death in the lahar. He is so close to making the jump across the bridge, only for the bridge to be swept upside down by the current, throwing him into the raging waters full of concrete, steel and tree trunk debris. His colleagues know as soon as he gets out of the van that he's going to die, and can only stand and watch with heartbreak on their faces as the inevitable happens. Hallahan's final, resigned expression as the bridge tips and carries him into the air really sells the scene, as does Heslov's devastated expression after Paul disappears in the water. The only thing that slightly ruins the gravitas of the scene is a Wilhelm Scream that can be heard as Paul falls in the water.
