Cast the Expert: Dennis Farina was himself a former Chicago cop who served under series co-creator Chuck Adamson. John Santucci was a former jewel thief and had been arrested by Farina and Adamson.

What Could Have Been: Michael Mann planned the first season to span from Chicago in 1964 to Las Vegas in 1980. Due to budget constraints, it spans from 1963-4.

Kent Cheng, who usually plays the likeable, Fat Comic Relief character (or at the very least, a good guy) plays Inspector Hung, a Fat BastardHate Sink villain. He earns a nomination for the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, though he didn't win.
Wag the Director: The original script was much darker, with Eddie Chan being emotionally damaged, in a love-hate relationship with his therapist, and having considerable self-doubt. These things, which had attracted Jackie Chan to the role in the first place, apparently made him worried about how it would affect his screen persona; as such, many scenes were removed from the final movie, and new ones added to lighten the tone, to the chagrin of director Kirk Wong.
What Could Have Been: Inspector Eddie was originally written with Jet Li in mind. However, at that time Li's agent was recently murdered after getting on the bad side of the triads, and Li fears for his own safety for taking part in a crime and triad-themed film like Crime Story so soon. As such he instead choose the relatively gangster-free wuxia film Tai Chi Master.
