Trivia / Carry On Cowboy

Go To

  • Billing Displacement:
    • Although Peter Butterworth and Bernard Bresslaw only play small roles in the film, "The Classic Carry On Film Collection" DVD boxset lists them with the stars as they would go on to play bigger roles later in the series.
    • When the film was released on Blu-Ray in Australia, Jon Pertwee was given a mention on the back of the box despite only playing a small role.
  • Blooper:
    • Although Marshal accidentally destroys the inquiries desk, it can be seen intact once more as he leaves the office.
    • The twigs poking out of Big Heap's sleeve disappear after he accidentally blows himself up.
  • California Doubling: The movie was filmed in Surrey and Buckinghamshire, as well as Pinewood Studios where all the Carry On films are filmed. The main street of the town has T-junctions at each end to disguise the fact that it didn't open onto the wild prairie, but onto the green hills of the Thames Valley.
  • The Cast Showoff: Sid James had experience riding a horse in Australia. He loved the horse that he rode for the film; in unseen footage from a news crew that hung around the cast during filming, Sid is seen talking excitedly about his horse, calls it his "girlfriend" and kisses it, claiming that he wouldn't let her kiss him.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • Germany: The Rumpo Kid.
    • Hungary: Go on, Cowboy!.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: The book The Carry On Films by Steven Gerrard at one point incorrectly claims that Marshal is a sheriff rather than a marshal.
  • Creator's Favorite Episode:
  • Deleted Scene:
    • The BBFC cut the line "I hope I didn't stop you getting it in".
    • Marshal stepping in a cowpat.
      Marshal: Dirty moocows!
    • Marshal trying to prove to Colonel Houston that he is the Marshal of Stodge City, only for Rumpo to lie and make him out to be a cattle thief.
    • Big Heap singing a drunken limerick at Rumpo's Place:
Big Heap: Oh, there was a Red Indian's daughter,
      Who everyone called Running Water.
      Till an arrow from high,
      Punctured her main supply,
Now her water don't run as it oughter!
    • Rumpo trying to free Big Heap from his cell by using a horse to rip off the cell door.
  • DVD Commentary: With Carry On historian Robert Ross talking to Angela Douglas (Annie Oakley).
  • Edited for Syndication: The film was cut down to 82 minutes when shown on ITV.
  • Fake American: Kinda the point. The only ones allowed to speak in their normal accent were Jim Dale and Charles Hawtrey.
  • Never Work with Children or Animals: Richard O'Brien and the horse master were both thrown off a difficult horse.
  • On-Set Injury:
    • To do Judge Burke's American accent, Kenneth Williams had to speak out of the side of his mouth. After a week, Williams began feeling pain on the side of his face and discovered that he had taken his jaw out of alignment thanks to this. To make matters worse, he had to carry on speaking in that manner for the rest of the filming period.
    • Richard O'Brien was thrown off the horse several times during his riding audition. The horse master then tried to show off and make it look easy, only to be thrown off himself!
  • Referenced by...:
    • The film can be seen playing on TV in the Play for Today episode "The Silly Season".
    • The Young Ones episode "Bambi" briefly flashes a still frame from the ending.
    • The film can also be seen playing on TV in the Inspector Morse episode "Greeks Bearing Gifts".
  • Stunt Double: Diana MacNamara doubles for Angela Douglas in the riding scenes.
  • Surprisingly Lenient Censor: Big Heap's use of the word "bloody" went unnoticed by the BBFC and was allowed in the final film.
  • Uncredited Role: Richard O'Brien as one of Big Heap's braves who attacks Marshal and Annie's stagecoach.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • During the filming of Carry On Cleo, Jim Dale suggested to Peter Rogers that he make the next film Carry On Camelot, with Sid James as King Arthur, but Rogers wasn't interested.
    • Peter Rogers wanted to have Charles Hawtrey sing a quick snatch of Rose Marie's "When I'm Calling You Ooh", but the American publishing house wouldn't allow it.
    • Belle telling Rumpo that he's got "a big one" had to be refilmed as the BBFC wouldn't allow it without the gun visible in frame.
    • The BBFC also tried to cut two more of Belle's lines - "I hope that's your gun, Marshal" and "That'll teach you to ask me for a quick one", as well as the "Peace on, peace off" gag.
  • Working Title: The Rumpo Kid.
