Trivia / Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids

  • Actor Allusion: In the first episode "The Scientist" Wally jokes that they were just "monkeying around". Wally was voiced by Micky Dolenz on The Monkees.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: Micky Dolenz, then-ex member of the popular boy band The Monkees, voiced Wally here.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: This is one of the Hanna-Barbera shows that gets hit by this a lot, to the point where it feels like a lot has been said on this show without some people actually watching much of it.
    • One of the most common mistakes seen on this show is on it's style, which is sometimes cited as being much like Scooby-Doo. While in terms of designs, one can understand why; but in terms of plots, the majority contain the characters taking down spy and cold war-inspired criminals. The only time there even is a fake ghost element, it is found out in the middle of the episode with no dramatic unmasking. Saying it's just like Scooby-Doo really doesn't make much sense at all.
    • Also on this track, there are sometimes a mention that this show contains "four kids and a talking dog", even though Elvis doesn't talk. And in this show, the star is the actual leader of the group, Butch Cassidy; while on Scooby-Doo, Fred is the defacto leader, but Scooby himself is the star Here, Butch is both.
    • While in the show's music numbers, it is clear Steffy plays a bass guitar. However in the first episode "The Scientist", they wheel an upright bass into the gig which is a ploy to let the titular scientist sneak into the case (a grown man can't really fit into a guitar case after all). Steffy later identifies it as "my bass". Yet for the rest of the show, the upright bass never returns with Steffy just playing the bass guitar. Some sources will state Steffy plays the bass due to the first episode while to be a bit more proper to instrument classification, it really should be said she is the group's bass guitarist.
  • Follow the Leader: In regards to how this fits in with Hanna-Barbera You Meddling Kids shows, the main group are within the same general roles as the five of Scooby-Doo (We have a male leader, a girly girl, a smarter girl, a skinny coward and his dog). Outside of the one episode with a "Scooby-Doo" Hoax in it, this is about all it follows Scooby's lead on.
    • In terms of plots, it would be far more accurately described as "what if Josie and the Pussycats were assigned cases like Jonny Quest". In this show, the kids get assigned cases and go into investigate. The band is a part of their cover. Only once do they bump into a case, and even then they are suspicious before they even get there.
    • The villains for the most part are usually making some kind of cash grab (stealing pearls, counterfeiting operations, going after some high tech secret or device) or political maneuvering (impersonating royalty, stealing another country's ships). By comparison they're more spy-oriented than the ones Scooby and Josie often dealt with.
    • All these aside, there's also a resemblance in the set up with the film The Phynx, which involved a rock and roll group being used as teen spies.
  • Screwed by the Network: During the period Cartoon Network started hammering in their "Cartoon Cartoons" more at least one advertisement bump had I.M. Weasel diss this show with "This......is in color". Butch as a show of its type had some airtime on Cartoon Network before mostly joining rotation on Boomerang blocks. However even then sometimes the programming room liked slipping in what at worst were insults or at best ymmv jokes at some of the library.
