The Film

  • Acclaimed Flop: At least in the U.S. where it's theaterical run was EXTREMELY brief, making only $242,623 in theaters (against a $3 million budget), opening in only 11 theaters. Thankfully, Trimark Pictures (now Lionsgate) gave it a really good promotional campaign when it hit home video.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • Brazil: Animal Hunger
    • Hungary: Corpses!
    • Italy: Splatters: gli Schizzacervelli ("Splatters: the Brain Splatterers")
    • Poland: Brain Necrosis
    • Spain: Your Mother Has Eaten My Dog
  • Hey, It's That Place!: Peter Jackson would later use The Pinnacles, where this film's opening scene was shot, as the entrance to the Paths of the Dead in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
  • Hollywood Old: Elizabeth Moody was in her early-'50s when she played the 60-year-old Vera Cosgrove.
  • Referenced by...:
    • Peter Jackson makes a nod to this film in his King Kong adaptation. The ship's cargo has a crate which reads "Sumatran Rat Monkey - BEWARE THE BITE".
    • The climax of the Spanish horror-comedy Witching & Bitching features a gigantic, bloated, rotten-looking female monster. It's based on those ancient fertility idols such as the Venus of Willendorf, but the fact that it is the mother goddess of the witches and swallows the male main character whole makes it a pretty clear nod to Jackson's film.
    • The Cuban/Spanish film Juan of the Dead features a Badass Preacher called Preacher Jones, who saves the main characters from a horde of zombies and later announces he will "kick arse for the Lord".
