- Character Outlives Actor: Due to the passing of many of the B5 cast since the show's end — Jerry Doyle, Mira Furlan, Richard Biggs, Tim Choate, Andreas Katsulas, and Michael O'Hare — all of their characters had to be recast for this animated continuation. (Stephen Furst and Jeff Conaway have also passed away and are included in the dedication, but their roles didn't need recasting, since Vir only appeared briefly in a non-speaking role, and Zack Allan didn't appear at all in this work.)
- Distant Sequel: The first Babylon 5 screen release since Babylon 5: The Lost Tales: Voices in the Dark sixteen years prior, though it takes place in between the last two episodes of the series proper.
- Interquel in Another Medium: The film's plot takes place before the original series finale, "Sleeping in Light". However, rather than being a live action reunion, the film is an animated one instead.
- Network to the Rescue: In a reversal of the usual trope that applies to the relationship between Warner Brothers and the Babylon 5 franchise. Per JMS, the long-unnamed individual at WB who was holding a grudge against the franchise for two and a half decades no longer works at WB, and more supportive corporate leadership began pushing for a B5 revival.
- Real Life Writes the Plot: On the musical front, longtime B5 composer. Christopher Franke not returning on musical duties (and Dynamic Music Partners taking over). According to JMS, he did speak with Franke, but the composer is both semi-retired and was unavailable on another project in Germany. As it is, The Lost Tales remains his last TV scoring credit (which, as JMS states, was largely done as a favor to him).
- Role Reprise: JMS was able to get together as many of the living cast as he could to reprise their roles for this film. This includes Bruce Boxleitner as John Sheridan, Claudia Christian as Susan Ivanova, Patricia Tallman as Lyta Alexander and Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari.
- Sequel Gap: Came out sixteen years after "Voices in the Dark", and twenty-four and a half years after the last regular B5 episode.
