Trivia / Azealia Banks

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: Broke With Expensive Taste received positive reviews from critics and fans and appeared on several year-end best lists for 2014, but peaked at #30 on the Billboard 200 and didn't produce any charting singles. Granted, it was an independent release with relatively little promotion.
  • Chart Displacement: "212" is by far her most well-known song, but in the US it never charted anywhere, whereas "Chasing Time" reached #12 on the Dance charts. Averted in most other countries where it is her highest-charting song.
  • Development Hell: Broke With Expensive Taste had been in the works for years, though it had a surprise release. It was originally slated for release in late 2012 and ended up being released in late 2014.
  • Executive Meddling: Suffered from this with her label, Universal Music, leading to Broke With Expensive Taste suffering Development Hell. It got so bad that in early 2014 she literally begged the label to drop her on Twitter.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Inverted: Azealia has been said to be a big Bloc Party fan; Bloc Party's frequent collaborator, Paul Epworth, is producing her debut album. "Bambi" is the first-released fruit of their labor.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: She was axed from a UK festival she was intended to headline after a series of racially offensive and homophobic tweets directed at Zayn Malik. The backlash was bad enough that she was nearly even banned from entering the UK entirely by the Home Office.
  • What Could Have Been: Recorded collaborations with Lady Gaga and Disclosure that never got released due to conflicts between Azealia and those artists. A collaboration with Lil' Kim was also apparently in the works but never came to light.
    • Her breakdown following her performance on Wild 'n Out had her cancel Fantasea II: The Second Wave. Fortunately several singles from the mixtape is being released somewhat sporadically.
