Trivia / American McGee's Alice

Go To

  • Banned in China: The game was banned in Ireland for its darkness and violence.
  • Creator Backlash: American McGee regrets including a portrait of Lewis Carroll in the "Castling" level; feeling that the author shouldn't be seen or exist in the game's canon.
  • Development Hell: Not for the game itself, but for the movie adaptation, which has gone on for years with no major developments. A series of short animated films set in the universe was crowd-funded, leading to some hope that a film adaptation would finally see the light of day.
  • Dummied Out:
    • The 2011 re-release brightened up textures but removed quick saving/loading on consoles, the ability to hotkey weapons as well, and the ability to call the Cheshire Cat whenever you wanted on both console and PC versions.
    • The original has many unused lines (some were recycled into the sequel) and a few working NPCs that don't show up in the game: the Fish Footmen and Frog Footmen, which draw wooden swords and summon Card Guards, and the bizarre Fungi; physically a small legless creature strapped to another buoyant animal, which follows the player but doesn't attack.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The PC version is not available on EA's Origin Store. The sequel is, but not the Complete Collection that includes the original. However, you can get a CD Key from GameStop's website, and on consoles it can be downloaded for free as DLC.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • An early screen shows the Cheshire Cat fighting alongside Alice.
    • American McGee actually didn't want to have his name in the title, feeling it wasn't fair in light of how many others contributed to the game. He actually tried to fight against it but it was a marketing move.
    • Executive Meddling supposedly prompted the devs to make the game Darker and Edgier than they originally intended.
    • Supposedly there was an American McGee's Oz in the talks... It was based on the Dystopian Oz trope. An attempt at crowdfunding OZombie was done in 2013, but it didn't reach its goal.
    • Early versions of Alice wore a cross instead of her omega necklace. Some badly done versions even made the cross look inverted, and you know that's never going to fly.
    • When the film adaptation was in development, Sarah Michelle Gellar was attached for a long time to play Alice. Jean Marsh was also slated to play the Queen of Hearts.
