That One Sidequest / Call of Duty: Zombies

Go To

"Sidequest" might not be the best way to describe these, but some of these objectives can be pretty aggravating otherwise.

Black Ops II

  • As if TranZit wasn't aggravating enough, the final step of Richtofen's Easter Egg requires four EMP Grenades to be thrown into four different portals on the map within five seconds. To pull this off, all four players need to get a set of EMP Grenades, which amounts to a shitton of goes on the Mystery Box. It can be done with only two players getting EMP Grenades, but the means of doing so are so convoluted that it's not usually recommended. It's very jarring considering the rest of the Easter Egg is so easy.
  • Buried's final step, regardless of who you side with, requires all four players to shoot down some targets. Simple, right? Well, the pattern requires all four players to be on the ball - if one player messes up, you've gotta do it all again. Hope you're all on a good connection!
  • Origins has two - first being the first step, which involves building all four of the Elemental Staffs, and upgrading them. The steps for getting the Wind and Lightning Staffs are seen as too complex for an average player, and you need to lug that there gramophone around to pull this off too. And that's all just to complete step one. A later step involves going inside one of the three Humongous Mecha on the map (preferably Odin) and activating the purge sequence, at which point you are given a ten second time limit to set a G-Strike down on a patch of grass near where you land after flying out of the mecha. Ten seconds is a very strict time limit, considering how long it takes to regain control of your character after activating the purge sequence - solo players are given no room for error.

Black Ops III

  • Zetsubou No Shima, already a divisive map, has its challenges. They are very specific in what they ask of you to do, including killing a Thrasher at a specific moment (i.e. before they are angered). Like the Origins example, this essentially gives you no room for error, and you have to get really lucky with where a Thrasher spawns if your challenge involves them.
  • Gorod Krovi's bomb step can be really easy if you know what you're doing, but it has caused many players trouble. There are six locations flashing on the map, the order in which they flash represents the order in which the bombs need to be disarmed. If you mess up, all the bombs go off, and you'll probably get a Game Over. A prime example of Poor Communication Kills, because a mismatched team can easily bung up the order.

Black Ops 4

  • The Icarus step for Blood of the Dead. The mechanics of the Spectral Shield are already a faff, but it's essential for the Easter Egg and most of all this step. You have to run all around the map, listening for a seagull's call and find the damned bird in Spectral Vision - you cannot see it with the naked eye - and blast it with a Spectral charge, hope you got one of those charged up! Now keep in mind that the map's pretty big and the call is easily drowned out in not only the loud music tracks as you flit from area to area, but the cries of the Zombies as well. Now further keep in mind that there are 40 locations Icarus can rest in. And you can only do it once a round. And you gotta do it four times. And the fourth time is a Guide Dang It! moment and then somenote
  • Not an Easter Egg part but certainly a side thing, upgrading Alistair's Folly. Most buildables have all of 3 things needed to build them, like the Acid Gat Upgrade Kit. Because the Folly can be upgraded twice, to the Chaos Theory and then to Alistair's Annihilator, you overall need 20 parts; 3 for Pack-a-Punch, 6 for Silver Bullets, another 2 for the Chaos Theory (one of which requires the Ballistic Shield to access, so that's another 3) and a final 6 (3 drops of bile, 2 Chaos Material and a final part) for the Annihilator itself. Not a real issue once you know where all those parts are, and the Annihilator is well worth the hassle, but it only adds to the unbearable scavenger hunt stuff that Treyarch Zombies has an unfortunate tendancy to fall into.

Black Ops: Cold War

  • For the otherwise rather easy Easter Egg... er, Main Quest of Firebase Z, the part where you capture certain Mimics to capture their memories to gain data on Samantha Maxis' location was widely agreed to be outrageously difficult. Firstly, only certain Mimics can be used to gain the correct memories. That is, only ones that spawn as items. Next, you have to bring them down to quite low health, as they can otherwise break free of the Essense trap device and destroy it. As if that wasn't enough, you will have to do this step about a dozen times as even Mimics that match the description can provide a wrong memory, forcing you to retry.
