Tempting Fate / Web Videos

Go To

  • A Boy did a series of videos on Fire Emblem Engage, in which he often remarks about how easy the game is, only for things to go terribly wrong. For example, in this video, he hopes Etie will have good stat growths when leveling up, but instead she gets a single hit point, the worst possible result apart from no stat growth at all.
  • From Achievement Hunter:
    • Ray Narvaez Jr. has a Running Gag of asking whether there is fall damage or not, after having jumped from a high position. More often than not, there is. This stems from an LP of "Trouble in Terror Town" where he leaps off a roof and asks, mid-jump, "Is there fall damage?" There is and he dies, leading the terrorists to win that round.
    • Later, during Episode 34 of their Minecraft series, Ray takes part in a pig racing tournament. He says "Richard Phist V2 is doing grea... oh, you're in the water, you fuck."
    • This is probably true for any game they play, be it Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto IV, Worms, Halo — if things are going their way and someone says something to tempt fate, then they'll get it in the behind.
    • Jack Patillo gets an example of this during an episode of their Minecraft series.
Jack: Surprisingly, I have not found any lava... and by saying that, I know I'm jinxing myself.
    • Michael Jones at one point mistakes Gavin Free for a Creeper in Minecraft. Immediately afterwards, an actual Creeper shows up, which Michael mistakes for Gavin.
    • Gavin Free has done this fairly often himself. See his page for multiple cases of him doing this.
  • Played for Laughs across various Angry Video Game Nerd episodes. Many was the time he'd find a video game adaptation that wasn't made by his Arch-Enemy LJN Toys, but rather the British developer Ocean Software, and conclude with a sigh of relief that meant the game was likely to be at least decent. Naturally, these games were all awful as well. He learns from this and eventually concludes that Ocean is basically "the British LJN", reacting to them with the same fear with which he reacts to LJN.
  • Said by Linkara in Atop the Fourth Wall before trying to upload an A.I. to his spaceship through an ion storm. Cue Iron Liz switching into a Mirror Universe.
  • Break It to Make It: There are moments when the players will predeict the item the get to destroy the target object with to be something extremely powerful and effective, but it is often that likely won't be effective.
  • BuzzFeed Unsolved: Practically Shane's hobby. He has yelled at demons to kill him, given Ryan's home address away to dark spirits so they can follow him home, laid down on a Pentagram in a basement supposedly used for Satanic rituals, and openly declared a dangerous spiritual entity's bridge to be his if it didn't show itself.
  • Chuggaaconroy is over this trope.
  • In Critical Role, When Keyleth hits the bottom of a thousand foot cliff, her player Marisha, proclaims that "It's fine! We're gods!". Travis lampshades it, "Did you just say we're gods? Why would you even tempt that?". Naturally she dies on impact.
  • Don't Hug Me I'm Scared:
    • After Yellow Guy runs off in tears in episode 3, Red Guy mentions that he "wonder[s] what will happen"... and shortly afterward, Shrignold, a malevolent cultist, shows up.
    • Red Guy says this very same thing near the end of episode 6 right before he unplugs the machine responsible for the teachers.
  • Dream SMP:
    • Jschlatt does this seconds prior to Quackity's Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal and subsequent Heel–Face Turn. Mocking Quackity's indecisiveness and hesitation, Jschlatt claims that Quackity wouldn't even shoot him with the bow he's holding despite the fact that it'd one-shot him. Quackity immediately shoots Jschlatt with the bow, and it does indeed one-shot him.
    • A tragic example comes at the end of the Lockdown Era. During his stay in Pandora's Vault, Tommy continues to insist that Dream can't harm him and that he'll be leaving prison just fine. At the end of the stream, Dream brutally beats Tommy to death.
  • Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: The Game - The Movie: When Jekyll's fiancée admits that she is worried about the wedding, Jekyll's response is literally "What Could Possibly Go Wrong?" The next day, the entire town decides to form an angry mob at the pub, complaining about his punchable face and decides that he is deserving of death.
  • The fifth round of the F1 YouTuber Championship, Matt is catching up to an A.I.-controlled Nico Rosberg, who had just come out of the pits on prime-compound tyres. Ben, a little ways back, has this quip when Matt goes for a dive-bomb.
Ben: And we all know how that turned out.
    Matt: ROSBERG, NO!!!!!!!!!
    Aarav: Ben said it!
Matt: ROSBERG, WE PARTIED IN THE AMBER LOUNGE!
  • The Game Grumps have an almost uncanny ability to declare things like "this is easy" right before getting trounced by a Wake-Up Call Boss, "I got this" before failing numerous times, or being interrupted by a random encounter while trying to say it's a good thing there are no random encounters in a dark cave. Typically they find it funny as hell.
    • Quite possibly the best example is them playing Dead Rising and Arin taking on the Special Forces attack helicopter that's circling the mall courtyard — he runs under some trees and confidently explains that it can't see him in the shadows and then, right on cue, he is completely rocked by a missile fired from the helicopter that knew exactly where he was.
    • Similarly is when Danny is explaining with great confidence how he loves that Zelda II: The Adventure of Link has enemies that react to Link, such as the Lowder enemies which slowly wander around aimlessly but will quickly rush at Link when he stands at the same height as them. Then he demonstrates and, as if deliberately to spite him, the Lowder ignores Link and instead nonchalantly wanders away and glitches through through the wall. Arin laughs so hard at the perfect timing he ends up coughing and choking.
Danny: Like, he'll walk away but as soon as you're... like... ... oooo-kay, bad example. Oh, old-school Nintendo, you make me so happy.
    • And when playing Punch-Out!! Danny is doing very well against Bald Bull and proudly declares he might take him down without taking a hit. Bald Bull lands a hit as he is saying this.
Danny: That's my signature move. Talking shit, and immediately being interrupted by a swift blow to the side of my head.
    • Speaking of talking shit, Danny does it again when playing INSIDE (2016) when he outruns some guard dogs and tips a filing cabinet in front of the door to keep them out. Before leaving however he notices he can see the dogs leaping futilely at the cabinet trying to get over it, and so he runs back to taunt them. Turns out the developers anticipated this and, the second he hops up on the cabinet, the dogs manage to grab his ankle and drag him out of the room to his death much to his utter horror and Arin's amusement.
Danny: Yeah! Good job, kid! Fuck you dogs! Fuck you— OH GOD!!! OH GOD NO! OH SHIT OH FUCK!!! I shouldn't have talked shit, I should not have talked shit. Aw, now I gotta do this all over again! Sorry I talked shit everyone, I got too Jersey.
    • And when playing Ross's brutally hard troll level "Companion Spring 3D", right before getting to the lava elevator that would stop them dead in their tracks for the next 45 minutes or so?
Danny: Child's play, Ross! Is that all you got for us?
    • During their adventures in Escape The Backrooms, they are trying to stealthily sneak past some Humanoid Abominations to make their way through a room. Arin confidently yells "See ya fuckers!" once he's made it past, and as if on cue all the enemies react to his presence and capture him. Dan sums it up the best, after laughing his ass off:
Danny: Way to get cocky, kid! It was as if you said it out loud in the game! Later asshole— OH SHIT!!!
  • An unscripted subversion occurs on the Gamespot YouTube channel, in the GTA Diaries episode "Three Peak Challenge" when Cam Robinson and Seb Ford are in a bicycle race through the streets of Los Santos. Seb muses "This is my neighbourhood. I know these streets. These streets are my streets," just before a car plows into Cam.
    "Thanks, neighbours!"
  • MatPat, of Game Theory, released a 3-part video explaining the full story behind the Five Nights at Freddy's lore, using the information from all 3 of the titles that had been released by that point. The DAY after the first part went up, Five Nights at Freddy's 4 was announced. His reaction to this information marked the tail-end of the third part.
  • Jim Sterling in his Jimquisition article "Hate Out of Ten". After a rant on gamers whining about how a rating of 8 out of 10 for a highly anticipated game is not a good enough score, he nervously asks "At least we're not criticizing 9's, at least now. Right? Yeah?" Cue a blog criticizing Games Radar for giving The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword a 9.
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Abridged: Poor Dio.
Dio: Why can't I move? Wh... why can't I— No, no, [sees Jotaro walking out the fire] nononoNONO! MOTHERF**KER!!! [Jotaro stops in front of him] NO! NO! NO! NO! BULLS**T! BULLS**T! BULLS**T! Okay, okay, okay, calm down, Dio. Calm down. Calm down, Dio... calm down. Okay...okay. If I, Dio, don't move, then he won't realize that I, Dio, am not in front of—
    [Star Platinum smashes Dio's leg]
    Dio: OH MY GOD!
    Jotaro: Time Continues.
  • lonelygirl15:
    • At the end of the episode "Backyard Bikini Patrol", Sarah remarks, "Us girls had a kickass day today. And, you know what? Tomorrow is gonna be even better!" The following day, in "Tick Tick Boom", villain Salinas sends her a video of her boyfriend Bound and Gagged with a bomb strapped to his chest.
    • Also in "Partner Swap", the day before prom night, Emma comments, "I have this feeling that we're going to have the most memorable night of our lives." In the next episode, "Prom: It's To Die For", Gina is killed.
  • Matthew Santoro:
    • In 20 Haunting Halloween Facts, Matt discusses the urban legend that drinking Diet Coke with Mentos on Halloween causes you to explode. He says that there's no truth to it, and gets out a Mento and some Diet Coke to prove it. He explodes.
    • In Anonymous, Matt says that he's safe from being hacked by Anonymous, since he's a small-time creator. Anonymous immediately takes over his video.
  • In the first Meme House stream, Joel has one of these when Garfield is about to cook a meal.
Joel: Dude, if he fucks up mac and ch— [Joel is interrupted by the stove bursting into flames] GARFIELD?! GARFIEEELD?!
  • A Running Gag of Musical Hell will be Diva wrapping up a review of a crap musical with how that's probably as bad as anything she's seen and the next one has to be better...only to learn the next one is an even worse movie.
Diva: Why do I say these things?! WHY?!
  • The Nostalgia Chick was sure that She-Ra and He-Man weren't as gay as the Critic made them out to be. He-Man baking proved her wrong.
  • The Nostalgia Critic:
    • It seems that when anyone tries to review the godawful Batman & Robin film, it is almost a requirement to suggest that it won't be as bad as it's made out to be (like RiffTrax and The Nostalgia Critic, with the latter providing a quote). In the case of the Critic, not less than 15 seconds after saying so, he tries (and fails) to pop a cyanide pill.
    • Throughout the Critic's review he's been doing this a lot. He said that a current scene would be even cheesier if a certain special effect is used or quote is said. And then that happens anyway.
  • The Online Warrior:
    • Maximillian, in the wake of the Final Fantasy VII Remake announcement, joked that it and Half-life 3 were two of the most requested games never made". He later amended this to include Shenmue 3... right before Shenmue 3 was announced.
    • During the E3 presentation of Kitchen, he joked that if Capcom wanted to make horror games like it, they should just rename them Resident Evil, even doing a mock announcer voice saying "Resident Evil 7". Said E3 presentation ended with the reveal that Kitchen was merely the working title for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
  • Party Crashers: In "I Made a Mario Party Challenge for my Birthday...", Nick mutes the Discord call between him and the others to tell his Twitch viewers that if someone pays Mr. I to travel across the board, he's essentially screwed out of acquiring the Star, as he's currently in Mr. I's line of fire. Guess what Sophist decides to do for his turn shortly after.
  • Pirates SMP:
    • Played for Drama. After the Rescue Arc on Day 76, Owen says that outside of the other pirates, she didn't think there was anyone on the Faction Isles that can "get got" whom she'd be particularly upset about. Barely a day later, the cast find out Hook, Owen's best friend on the Isles, has been kidnapped by the Hooded Figures off-screen and are Forced to Watch it be turned into a statue, and Owen Never Got to Say Goodbye due to being captured for weeks before that point.
Owen: (quietly; in private) …It was just meant to be a… I didn't think that we'd actually lose anybody…
    • While sailing back to the Faction Isles after the Revenge Raid on Day 77, Shelby mentions how she wants a statue of herself on the Faction Isles, to which Scott suggests that she build one for her planned resort and she answers she'll do so as long as she doesn't become a statue herself; they later part ways after returning to the Isles, with Scott telling her not to get kidnapped again and she says she'll try. This is the last livestream in which Shelby appears in; the next time she's seen, it's the finale on Day 134 and she's been Killed Offscreen and Taken for Granite on morbid display in Iris' temple.
  • The first song in Prop 8: The Musical ends with "Nothing can go wrong/So join us in this song/Of happy days, for the gays/Nothing can go wrong!" Enter the Corrupt Corporate Executive with the titular proposition.
  • Pro and Noob: During the official Deviljho quest in Monster Hunter: World, Josh and Cotton try to escape Deviljho through the hollow log in the Ancient Forest. This is the result.
Rage: He can't fit through there...
    [Deviljho destroys the log]
Cotton: I don't think he needs to fit through there.
Rage: Well, he can't close distances—
[Deviljho lobs a boulder at them]
Cotton: [cracking up] I don't think he needs to close distances.
Rage: I'M GONNA STOP SPEAKING NOW. I'M JUST GONNA STOP SAYING THINGS.
  • ProtonJon:
    • During a Mario Party Superstars stream, Cole activates Chance Time. The first two slots spin as Waluigi (Jon, who's leading) and Yoshi (MC, who thanks to Cole triggering the Big Coin Beam has lost the 123 Coins he started the turn with). MC says this:
MC: This is a win situation for MC, no matter what.
(Cole promptly finds the one result that screws MC: Giving his Star to Jon)
MC: This is a TERRIBLE situation for MC!
  • Retsupurae:
    • In their Gaming in the Clinton Years Xenogears Retsupurae:
slowbeef: Okay, this is Xenogears. So there's no fucking way you have a Bill Clinton joke.
Diabetus: [in faux-Bill Clinton accent] "I'll show you something that's Weltall."
      [Beat]
      slowbeef: [astounded] Shit.
      Diabetus: Sorry.
    • In the video "The Most Shameful Thing in the World", slowbeef comments that the video, which is of an anime fan coming up with attacks for a M.U.G.E.N sprite, just couldn't get any worse. Cue Hare Hare Yukai dance.
Diabetus: With the amount of dignity lost, I don't see how this could possibly get any.. [Record Needle Scratch] ...worse?
    • In Let's Point at Super Metroid: "I propose this video cannot get worse from this moment. Seriously." Somehow, it did.
    • In MageKnight404's Let's Play of Pokemon White
MageKnight: So thanks for watching us play Pokemon White.
Diabetus: "[In Fake Hilda Voice] Who are you talking to?"
MageKnight: "[In his Hilda Voice] Wait, who are you talking to?"
      slowbeef: Oh god.
      Diabetus: Really?
    • During the Escape RP:
slowbeef: Now to solve this puzzle tout suite. [places sink handle on faucet and turns it on] First we turn on the water...
Proteus: This might be the least retarded solution for any puzzle in this game yet.
slowbeef: And we're going to stop up the water with the silver coin...
Proteus: Never mind... spoke too soon...
    • During the Arise 4 RF, slowbeef mentions the how easy it is to accidentally click off a window during the game's awful combat sections, while he's fighting one of the enemies. No points for guessing what he does almost immediately afterwards.
    • Invoked during "Adults React To PewDiePie":
slowbeef: [sigh] Y'know, maybe I'm making to much of this, maybe it's not that bad. I'm sure it has some appeal and there's probably nothing that terrible in these videos I mean you know—
PewDiePie: Look! He's raping her, he's raping her!
slowbeef: I'm sorry, what was that?
    • After the end of the mission in Surgical Strike, the protagonist goes to a tropical island to vacation with some bikini babes. DJB responds to this with "it'd be great if these beach girls just started exploding." They immediately do, courtesy of Kabul.
  • The Runaway Guys: During the Super Mario 3D World level "The Great Goal Pole", Jon begins to get ahead of the fleeing goal pole and yells "I'M WINNING THE RACE NOW, GOAL POLE!" Then he long jumps straight into the side of a donut block and falls to his death.
  • During the Space Engineers playthrough on Simon Lane and Lewis' channel, Lewis walks Simon through the piloting controls. Simon quickly notices that his ship loses speed when he's not accelerating, so Lewis tells him to turn off the inertia dampeners followed by a warning: "The amount of energy you put into speeding up is the same amount of energy you need to put into slowing down. So be careful." Immediately after Lewis finishes this sentence, Simon comes careening in from the edge of Lewis' POV and crashes into their Space Labs sign at ~80 km/h. The rest of the episode is basically Simon trashing their base with similarly clumsy piloting.
  • During Sips' Trouble in Terrorist Town playthrough, there are the following examples:
    • Turpster ends up RDMing note  Lewis Brindley. This presses Lewis' Berserk Button and makes him vow that he is going to gun Turps down, irrespective as to whether or not either of them is innocent. Turps openly broadcasts his location, clearly not expecting Lewis to actually go through with it... leading to his surprise when the latter emerges and shotguns him to death.
      Turps: AH, HE KILLED ME!
Trott: [laughing] He actually did kill him!//
    • During this episode, Hannah Rutherford shouts at Duncan Jones to find better cover, as Lewis has a sniper rifle, is the traitor and can still see his head. She then forgets to hide properly herself, allowing Lewis to snipe her effortlessly.
  • The Spoony Experiment The Spoony One sang a parody of Rob Van Dam's entrance music during one of the first episodes of Wrestle! Wrestle!, with cheesy lyrics about himself ("Duh-da-duh-da-duh! It's time for the Spoony One's! Duh-da-duh-da-duh! Wrest-ling show!"), then remarked "Watch people ask me to make that the theme song." You get three guesses as to what WW's theme song is, and the first two don't count.
  • When players are receiving their first hits for the SMPLive Assassin Event, Connor says he'll start crying if he gets Sneegsnag. Naturally, that's exactly who he gets.
  • Steam Train is no stranger to this either, with one episode of VVVVVV having Ross proudly declare "Watch me do it in one go!" The next 25 straight minutes of the episode is nothing but him trying over and over to get past this part with no success. There's even warning text from Barry cautioning you that no, there is nothing else in the rest of this episode but this over and over and over.
The rest of this episode is nothing but this. You have been warned.
  • In TableTop, Wil Wheaton mentions that one of the reasons he likes Zombie Dice is because nobody ever gets out to a huge lead. Cue Ryan Higa rolling ten brains on the first turn (out of 13 required for victory). The tempting of fate was exacerbated by the other players egging him on to keep rolling, believing that his luck was going to run out on him.
  • A Running Gag on TV Trash is for host Rowdy C. to set up a situation by saying that there's no way they could do [insert something truly despicable here], then cut instantly to just that. He's even lampshaded his tendency to tempt fate many times.
  • Ultra Fast Pony:
    • In "Funk Master Z", Twilight praises Ponyville for going an entire week without driving away some outsider, and she expounds on how happy she is that the others are becoming more accepting. As soon as she stops talking, she realizes her friends are hiding from Zecora because she's different. Cue a Rapid-Fire "No!" on Twilight's part.
    • In "Little Miss Montage":
Twilight: I think karma kicked in and the universe is finally giving me a happy, stress-free day!
      Rainbow Dash: Look out below!
      [crash]
Twilight: Thanks, universe. Thanks a lot.
  • UrinatingTree is known for doing this in his pre-scripted videos, but the most fitting example comes from his livestream from the 2018-19 NHL Trade Deadline. Seconds after expressing gratitude that the Pittsburgh Penguins did not trade for a slow, physical defenseman, the Pens did just that.
  • On something of a behind-the-scenes note, the Yogscast did a Heroes and Generals challenge which required the use of explosives. Smiffy of Hat Films was told to detonate by someone offscreen, and a subtitle comes up telling the viewers that Smiffy and the cast are in the "safe zone", a hundred feet away from the explosion. The explosives are detonated... and a very large chunk of dirt smacks Smiffy's helmet, causing him to gingerly grin at the camera and stare in surprise as the others laugh. Thanks to the helmet, he was fine, but the others, who were not as prepared, could easily have been hurt had they actually been hit.
