The story opens with Takafumi, the only member of his family, meeting Uncle. His family is utterly broken up.
Uncle’s return to Japan has him experience culture shock at a home that has evolved beyond his memories: his favourite games and manga are gone, his cellphone style is gone, and he gives Fujimiya money because he has no idea what he could gift her.
The three girls Uncle befriends don’t have a happy history:
Elf has some currently-unrevealed trouble in her past that makes her refuse to use her royal title.
As a child, Mabel was abandoned by her mother for a younger man.
Alicia can’t remember her age, because she’s an orphan. All she can remember is that she lost her family in a goblin attack on her birthday.
Uncle had to endure 17 years of bigotry and misfortune stuck in Grahbahamal.
Elf-san goes through major trouble involving Uncle: she takes a loan from a known loan shark to get back Uncle’s ring, she gets denied almost every romantic advance, and she has to see the man she loves adventure around with other women.
How does Uncle know a girl being nice to him is actually possessed? Because in all the time he was in Grahbahamal, every stranger has attacked him on first sight.
