  • No doubt, this is an angsty story with plenty of moments that can make you cry. Some of the big ones are:
  • Early on, we get a couple of flashbacks with Rori during his last moments of the war and before he was enslaved, and he was a strong, fierce fighter. It's quickly contrasted with how emaciated and timid it is at present, and it illustrates just how badly he's suffered at their hands.
  • When meeting his Master, Xávirac asks Rori for his name. "Slave Twenty Three" Rori says, that being the only name he's had for around two years. At his prompting, he has to stop and think back to the last time he saw his mother before he was shipped off to war to remember what his name is. Even Xávirac seems taken aback by it.
  • At dinner, Xávirac asks Rori how his steak is. Rori tells him it's a little undercooked, and Xávirac demands his plate despite Rori insisting he'll eat it anyways. He nearly cries at having his food taken away again. Luckily, Xávirac only wanted to cook it the rest of the way for him.
  • Later in the book, Rori goes to get treatment for his PTSD at the suggestion of his Master. We get the exact details of what happened, and it's just as horrific as you'd expect. Arguably the worst part is that it becomes clear that Rori still blames himself for it. It's also implied to be difficult for Doctor Daniel Llawrence, who specializes in helping people with severe trauma.
  • The ending, of the Tears of Joy variation.
