The Social Network tells the story of a Harvard student-turned-CEO who ends up being in charge of one of the most successful websites in the world, and becomes one of the richest people in the world...but at a great material and mental cost, both to his collaborators and to himself.

  • The opening sequence, especially with "Hand Covers Bruise" and the loneliness being shown.
  • The single tear rolling down Erica's shocked face when the drunken assholes tease her about her bra size following Mark's LiveJournal post.
  • "Your best friend [Eduardo] is suing you [Mark] for $600 million." Mark and Eduardo started off as two good friends making a funny attractiveness comparison website and later a social networking website, with Eduardo remarking that his dad would be proud to see him as "Co-Founder and CFO" of a highly successful website. Hearing this line after having watched the film the first time and seeing Mark's and Eduardo's friendship degrade into actions like Eduardo freezing the company's bank account and Mark cheat Eduardo out of ownership share of the company makes it even more heartbreaking.
  • The Reveal that the investor deal forced Eduardo out of ownership of the company.
Gretchen: What was Mr. Zuckerberg's ownership share diluted down to?
    Eduardo: It wasn't.
Gretchen: What was Mr. Moskovitz's ownership share diluted down to?
    Eduardo: It wasn't.
Gretchen: What was Sean Parker's ownership share diluted down to?
    Eduardo: It wasn't.
Gretchen: What was Peter Thiel's ownership share diluted down to?
    Eduardo: It wasn't.
Gretchen: And what was your ownership share diluted down to?
    Eduardo: Point zero. Three. Percent.
    ("Hand Covers Bruise" plays)
  • And when the flashback resumes...
Eduardo: It's like I'm not gonna be a part of Facebook!
Sean: It won't be like you're not a part of Facebook. You're not a part of Facebook.
Eduardo: My name's on the masthead.
Sean: You might wanna check again.
  • Mark and Eduardo's friendship falling apart in the end, culminating with Eduardo's breakdown in the office and announcing his intent to sue.
    • "I was your only friend...you had one friend."
  • After his relationship with Eduardo is destroyed, the Only Friend Mark still has is Sean Parker, until he gets the news that Sean was caught doing coke with underaged interns. Mark realizes too late Eduardo was right all along about Sean and disowns him as well. Now he truly has no friends left... ironic, given that his website helped millions of people make and keep in touch with their friends.
  • The final scene of the film is of Mark sitting alone, sending a Facebook friend request to Erica and refreshing the page every few seconds hoping she accepts it. We never see whether she does. It's clear that all of his actions that led to the two lawsuits that serve as the film's Framing Device are weighing down on him. The last line of the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue then appears:
