Hawkeye seeing settlers whom he'd be close friends of massacred by a war party. He knows he can't bury them because it would let said war party know they'd been there. The exchange between him and Cora is heartbreaking.
Cora: Though they are strangers, they are at least entitled to a Christian burial! Hawkeye: Let us go, miss. Cora: I will not. I have seen the face of war before, Mr. Poe, but never war made on women and children. And almost as cruel is your indifference! (Hawkeye turns back and rapidly approaches her, with Cora taking a fearful step back) Hawkeye:(voice breaking) Miss Munro... they are not strangers... (choked) And they stay as they lay.
Several in the chase scene in the finale. Most notably Uncas dying as his father runs toward him from a distance, just too late, and Alice killing herself to keep from being forced to marry Magua, mere minutes before she would have been rescued. Though, with Uncas dead, she probably had lost the will to live anyway.
