Tear Jerker / Tears for Fears

  • "Famous Last Words". It's about a couple perishing during a nuclear holocaust, but instead of running for the hills, they "run the bath" and listen to their favorite songs, as the Face Death with Dignity and die in each other's arms. A perfectly sad Downer Ending for The Seeds of Love.
  • "Woman in Chains". When Roland sings the lyric "And I feel somebody somewhere is trying to breathe", you'll be reduced to tears.
  • "Advice for the Young at Heart" invokes this trope in a somewhat more heart warming manner - it's a song sung by one newlywed to the other, with a timeless, almost ethereal Latin arrangement. The music video, showing a Latin American wedding, matches the lyrical and musical material nicely.
  • "And when you've taken down your guard, if I could change your mind, I'd really love to break your heaaart. I'd really love to break your heaaart!", from "Shout".
  • "Start of the Breakdown", a poignant Downer Ending for their first album.
  • "Brian Wilson Said" can be this, particularly the Subdued Section towards the end of the song. The Reality Subtext of Wilson's struggle with mental disorders only makes the song even more saddening. The succeeding song, "Goodnight Song", can also be quite a tear-jerker.
  • "Los reyes católicos (reprise)" has quite a heartbreaking arrangement. The penultimate song on Raoul, "Me and My Big Ideas", is also a quite downbeat song about the dissolution of a relationship.
  • "Memories Fade" is often overlooked, but it is rather depressing. Roland and Curt have even called it "a sad song" at one of their live concerts.
  • "The Working Hour": "Fear is such a vicious thing, it wraps me up in chains"
  • "Standing on the Corner of the Third World" and "Swords and Knives" can also be quite saddening, particularly since the latter is about Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen.
  • Their cover of Radiohead's "Creep" won't leave you with a dry eye.
  • "Mad World". Curt just sounds.....broken when he sings it, which proves that he's also capable of handling some pretty emotional tunes.
  • "Fish Out of Water" off of Elemental is an extremely bitter Take That! from Roland to Curt, written at a point when their personal and professional relationships were at an all-time low. Even though they repaired their friendship, this song still stands as a stark reminder of how close the duo came to losing each other for good.
