Tear Jerker / Remina

On the cosmic scale, the story is pretty chilling. But at a personal level, the story can be downright grief-inducing.

  • Ignoring the horror aspect of the story itself, you can't help but greatly sorry for the manga's titular character, Remina Oguro:
    • Even before the story had began, Remina's mom had died when she was very young. Based on how she is now as a result of her death, her mother must have meant quite a lot to her, possibly more than her own father.
    • It should also be noted that all of the awful things that happen to her were absolutely of no fault of her own. Her father names a planet after her, despite her insisting not to and gets egged into signing contracts for stardom.
    • The deaths of both Yasumi and her father put her in a pretty BSoD'd state. The worst part of it is that they were both the closet things that she had ever had to friends, and the only other people that DON'T want her dead give absolutely no shits about this fact.
    • When her father gets killed, Remina becomes so traumatized that she wants nothing more than to be killed by the cult that Yasumi and her remaining followers had tried to protect her from. She knows full well that she has no other options but to gracefully accept death, so that's precisely what she does...only for the cult's new leader, who was initially the president of her fanclub, to taunt her to run so that he can brutally torture her first.
    • Even though she's alive by the end of the story, this doesn't change the fact that she had already lost all of the people that she treasured, and never got the chance to actually develop herself up to that point when she turned 16, and had to rely on others throughout her life. This is even reflected in the ending, where she doesn't participate in all of the fun Daisuke and the others are having, but instead stares out the window, calling for both her father and Yasumi. Worst of all, she doesn't really have much of a life outside of her popstar career, being nothing more than a broken husk of a person, and her current future is completely determined purely by luck at this point, if they ever find a new place to reside, that is.
  • Daisuke also got it pretty rough. Daisuke never had a very stable family life, and his own family were completely against him being an astronaut. When they destroyed his chances of becoming one, he ran away from home, and lived for 10 years as a bum.
  • The entire premise of the story, about the downfall of humanity as we know it, can also invoke this. All it really takes is to find a Designated Villain, in this case Remina, for the strife a society may be facing, and average people become murderous and hateful. The fact that this rings true to real life, in which entire hate mobs form over a perceived enemy, makes it even sadder.
