Tear Jerker / Red Dog

Go To

You'll definitely need a box of tissues for this one.

  • At the beginning of the movie, some of the locals hold the poisoned Red Dog while the local policeman points his gun at him, about to shoot him to put the dog out of his misery. But the policeman lowers his gun and says he can’t do it. Both men and women are upset and crying. This also doubles as Nightmare Fuel.
  • John's Death. It isn't shown on screen, but the news about it isn't pleasant. It also doubles with Nightmare Fuel, as he was killed by a kangaroo while riding his motorcycle.
    • Some people then go searching for John. When they do find his body, their reactions are just gut-wrenching.
    • Although it's brief, the funeral scene is just so depressing. It can definitely hit close to home if you've lost a loved one or one of your best friends.
  • The entire search sequence is probably one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Aussie cinema. It just proves how loyal Red Dog was to John, and the music definitely does it justice.
Peeto: With all the sadness and arrangements for the funeral, everyone forgot about Red Dog. It wasn't till three days had passed that anyone noticed that, he was still waiting outside John's house.
    • It starts off with Red Dog waiting for him, in the heat and the cold. He had to survive the hottest of summers and the coldest of winters just waiting for John. Unbeknownst to him that John will never, ever come back.
      • This clip also has some extremely depressing Fridge Horror: If Red Dog had sat in that same spot for the rest of his life, he would die from malnutrition and dehydration. Since nobody was there to feed him or give him water.
    • "He Walked in the Transport, and looked into the face...of every man there. He was asking a single question. Have you seen John? Have you seen John? Have you seen John? Have you seen John?" Oh god, the feels.
    • The fact that he travelled through the Saltworks, the mall, the harbour, and even Japan just to find his master proves how loyal canines can be.
    • And this was based on a true story, too. Red Dog really did all that just to find John.
  • And of course, there's his death scene. After hearing about his story, the townspeople go out searching for red dog. They eventually find his corpse near John's grave. Meaning that he finally found him, in heaven.
    • "You stay boy, you stay here. You're home now" Cue the waterworks.
    • Some of the residents look like they're about to cry. Even Red Cat, who was former enemies with Red Dog, mourns his death.
    • The music, although a reprisal of The Search, doesn't make it any better. Again, it goes perfectly with the scene but it also makes the song a lot more emotional.
    • Near the end of the scene, there is a wide shot of all the Pilbara residents standing near Red Dog's grave. It is an absolutely beautiful shot. The Sunset in the distance only makes it better.
  • The reveal of the Red Dog statue near the end of the movie is a heartwarming Tear Jerker. Yes, the statue is up there for people to remember the Dog of the Northwest (One of the nicknames people used to call him) and yes, there is a new Red Dog. But the Red Dog people had come to know and love for many years had been long gone by then.
    • A few people can actually be seen crying during this scene. It makes you tell that they desperately miss the Pilbara Wanderer.
  • The Search may be one of the most beautiful film scores ever made, and it goes perfectly with the search sequence and Red Dog's death.
    • Hell, pair it with any sad footage and it'll definitely make people cry like a baby.
