- For most of the film, Jeff keeps trying to keep Lisa, whom he does genuinely love at arm's length. Constantly worrying that their two lifestyles are too different for their relationship to work. Fortunately, they do manage to make things work by the end of the film.
- Watching the poor struggling songwriter can be painful to anyone who works in the arts and has been in a similar position. His coming home drunk one night, only to scatter his sheet music off his piano in frustration is a particularly heartbreaking moment.
- After the dog gets killed, his owner rants to the other tenants about how even though they don't seem to care for each other, she still can't believe any of them would strangle "[t]he only thing in this whole neighborhood who liked anybody.""WHICH ONE OF YOU DID IT?! WHICH ONE OF YOU KILLED MY DOG?!"
- The plight of "Miss Lonelyhearts." Luckily, things are looking up for her at the end, but until then, what we see of her life is pretty depressing.
